Clinton says his enemies are now Hillary's

CORAL GABLES, Florida (Reuters) - President Clinton, showing
concern as first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton trails in her U.S.
Senate race, said in an interview released Tuesday his enemies
had "transferred their anger" to his wife.
"Everybody that always hated me all those years and were so mean
to me, they've all transferred all their anger to her now. It's
almost as if they've got one last chance to beat me," Clinton
told Fox Television affiliate WTVT in Tampa.
The interview was recorded Monday while Clinton visited Tampa,
and the White House released a transcript of the interview
Tuesday. The president was spending Tuesday golfing near Miami.
Recent polls showed Mrs. Clinton trailing Republican Rep. Rick
Lazio in the race for a New York U.S. Senate seat being vacated
by retiring Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. A Zogby
International poll published Sunday showed Lazio with a 49.6-42
percent lead over Mrs. Clinton.
"I think if we can get this election again in a position where
they just look at who's got the greatest strength, who's got the
ability to do more and which candidate do they agree (with), I
think she'll do fine," he said.
"I spend a lot more time worrying about her than I ever did
worrying about myself when I was out there running. I feel like I
just wake up every day wishing I could do something else to
help," he said.
The president has gone to sometimes extraordinary lengths to
support and defend Mrs. Clinton against political attacks. In
July he interrupted his participation in the Camp David Mideast
peace summit to telephone the New York Daily News and defend her
against accusations that she had made an anti-Semitic remark in
1974.
In the Fox interview Clinton again sought to dispel charges of
carpetbagging against Mrs. Clinton, who changed her residency to
New York, a state she had never lived in, to make the run. "There
are some people who voted for me that think they're mad at her
because she's running in New York and we just bought a home
there," he said.
"It wasn't her idea. The New York Democratic House delegation
came to her and asked her to run," he said.
Clinton said he was "thrilled" by the decision of his daughter,
Chelsea, to skip her fall term at Stanford University, in part to
campaign for Mrs. Clinton.
"She wanted to help her mother some, she wanted to be with me
when I would otherwise be alone -- and the third thing she wants
is just to be in a place (the White House) that has been her home
for nearly half her life, every night she can be, because she
knows when she leaves it's for good, you know, and she'll never
be back."
Chelsea Clinton accompanied the president in July to Camp David
and to a Group of Eight major nations summit in Japan, while Mrs.
Clinton pursued her Senate race.
