Bush takes on Clinton, calls president "desperate"

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate
George W. Bush went head-to-head with Bill Clinton Tuesday,
interpreting his attacks as a good omen and accusing the
president of being "desperate to have his legacy intact."
Less than 24 hours away from the party's determinedly upbeat
convention in Philadelphia where he will accept the Republican
nomination Thursday, the Texas governor fired back at Clinton for
asserting that he was, in effect, running for the White House
simply because his "daddy was president" and espousing the empty
rhetoric of "compassionate conservatism."
Bush, talking to reporters aboard his campaign plane en route to
the fifth of six battleground states he will visit before flying
into Philadelphia Wednesday, appeared invigorated by the fire
from the Democratic camp of his opponent on Nov. 7, Vice
President Al Gore.
"I welcome President Clinton's criticisms," he said. "It's
amazing to me that the president of the United States would spend
time trying to be a political pundit. He is so desperate to have
his legacy intact by getting Al Gore elected, he will say
anything."
Bush, who always ends his campaign events by raising his right
hand and swearing to uphold "the honor and dignity" of the office
if he is elected, pointed out that he had not even mentioned
Clinton's name on the stump recently.
Moments later, during a rally at the West Virginia war memorial
in Charleston, Bush declared: "This nation is sick and tired of
the politics of personal destruction. They want a uniter not a
divider ... this nation does not want four more years of
Clinton/Gore."
"SIGN OF CONCERN"
Later, an amused Bush told reporters: "I said Clinton/Gore, I
broke my pledge. You got me all riled up, so I said his name."
Asked if Clinton's attacks were helpful, he replied; "I don't
think it's harmful that the president is talking about me. I
think it's a sign they're a little concerned."
Bush's wife Laura, who opened the convention on prime time
television Monday night with a speech in which she too spoke abut
"honor and dignity" in the White House, interrupted to defend
herself.
"I wasn't talking about President Clinton. I was talking about my
husband and what it means when people come up with pictures of
their children and say 'don't let us down,"' she said.
"That's reality," Bush interjected. "When people walk up and say
'don't let us down,' we're just reporting what's happening."
Bush acknowledged his frequent references to running mate Dick
Cheney as "a man who understands what the meaning of 'is' is,"
were aimed directly at Clinton "in the context of having someone
who's going to shoot straight with the American people."
Despite the brief segue into counter-attack mode, Bush continued
to pitch his "positive vision" as his five-day pre-convention
tour rolled toward its final destination.
He also has made his way through Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and
Ohio, all states that Republicans have lost in the past two
presidential elections and where he holds narrow leads over Gore
in current polls.
At each stop, cheered by big and enthusiastic crowds, Bush has
predicted that would change in November.
He said he was excited about arriving in Philadelphia and eager
to deliver an acceptance speech that would "set a tone."
After stopping in Harrisburg, where he will spend the night at
the official residence of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, once
considered a possible candidate for the vice presidential slot on
the Republican ticket, Bush will make the short flight to
Philadelphia. He will be riding in a newly decorated Boeing 727
painted red, white and blue with the American flag and
BUSH-CHENEY emblazoned on the side.
