They are only saying that they will not release anyone until Friday night after the Republican National Convention is over. They still won't tell anyone what the charges are, why they were arrested, or where they are being held. They will not release Scott's van to Kendall, because they will not even acknowledge that he is being held. This is TOTALLY unacceptable to the protest organizers and to Kendall and me. The protest organizers are asking that we call the mayor of Philadelphia, John Street, and DEMAND that all the 280 people who were arrested in Philadelphia at the protests of the Republican National Convention be RELEASED IMMEDIATELY, and that their First Amendment and Fourth Amendment rights be honored. Scott is the only Texas person arrested in the group of 19 whose name is known by the police, because he forgot to give the support people (Kendall and I) his wallet. All the others in jail are practicing jail solidarity by refusing to provide any information to the police about themselves. Ann and Milo's names ARE NOT KNOWN TO POLICE. Ann and Milo are practicing jail solidarity and do not wish the police to known their identities. So please DO NOT GIVE NAMES TO THE POLICE. Please take the time to help us get our sisters and brothers out of the Philadelphia jail. YOU have the ability to help them and it's easy to do. Please call and/or fax Mayor John Street in Philadelphia at: (215) 686-2181. The fax number is (215) 686-2180. One call is great, a hundred calls is better. The more the merrier. Call your friends and ask them to call too. Permission is given to forward this message as far as possible. DEMAND JUSTICE AND RESPECT FOR CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL ARRESTED! *** (previous message follows) *** I've just received an update from Kendall via his wife regarding our brother Scott and his wife and son, Ann and Milo. Kendall says the Philadelphia police are being completely uncooperative and won't tell him where Scott, Ann, Milo, and the other 16 arrested activists that were in Scott's van are being held. Kendall says the police won't release Scott's van to him, and will not tell him anything useful at all. At this point, we don't know where they are, what -- if anything -- they are to be charged with, or how long they'll be held. Fellow Green David Cobb (who is an attorney) is helping us as best as he is able from Houston. Kendall is going to try to elicit the help of Philadelphia Greens that David recommended. I tried calling Legal Support for the protesters in Philly myself, but the number is understandably constantly busy. I'll keep you all updated. Peace, Cliff *** (original message follows) *** Here is the first report of what happened in Philadelphia at the mass protest of the Republican National Convention. Our fellow Greens Scott (Dallas County co-chair), his wife Ann, their 16 year-old son Milo, and three Greens from San Antonio -- who prefer not to be identified yet -- were arrested yesterday afternoon along with 13 other activists in Scott's van. The van was impounded. Kendall Clark and I (the only Dallas Greens who went to the protest) were not arrested. I am back home, but Kendall is still in Philadelphia trying to get everyone out, call everyone's emergency contacts, coordinate with legal support, get Scott's van out of impound, and basically just get everyone home. Scott, Ann and Milo were transporting the other 16 people in their van to the scene of an area to do a protest. Kendall and I were going to be support people for the group. Kendall and I were supposed to rendezvous with the group at the Greyhound bus station at 3:00 p.m., at which point we would go to the scene of the protest (two blocks away) and perform the action we had planned. The group never showed up. Finally, at 3:30 p.m., Kendall got a phone call on his cell phone. It was Scott. He told Kendall that 15 Philadelphia police officers had surrounded his van and arrested everyone in it. They had not committed any crimes or actions of any kind. They were not anticipating arrest. Kendall and I immediately started calling the emergency contact numbers the group of 19 had given us. We also called legal support and everyone else that needed to know what was happening. I concentrated on media. Because I needed to be back at work this morning, I left that night. Kendall stayed. Kendall called me this morning to tell me that it looks as if the Philadelphia Police are going to keep everyone they arrested that day in jail until the convention is over and then release them -- although it is possible that our friends might be charged with something minor. (There were many other arrests all over Philadelphia). For the most part the Philadelphia police have been considerably better than the Washington, D.C. police were at the IMF/World Bank protest -- no riot gear, tear gas, rubber bullets, shields, storm troopers, etc. They were really pretty decent. But all day on Tuesday, the police stopped and frisked everyone that looked "suspicious." Kendall says he was stopped and frisked about eight times yesterday while walking around trying to get information about our arrested friends. At one point, his finger was bent back when he was slammed against a wall and frisked. He thought it was broken but it wasn't, it was only bruised. I don't think we need to raise bail money at this point. But we need to think about our sisters and brothers in jail and keep them in our hearts as Kendall works on getting them out. And remember to thank Kendall next time you see him, for helping our people. BACKGROUND Scott, Ann, and Milo all went to Philadelphia in their van. Kendall went with them. They arrived in Philadelphia on Friday night, July 28, 2000. I arrived by plane Saturday night and Kendall and Ann met me at the airport and we rendezvoused with Scott and Milo at the organizer's Convergence Center. We ate, talked, met people, and planned activities. On Sunday morning all of us marched through downtown in the Unity 2000 March. It was the big catch-all protest (every issue). Then Milo, Kendall and I helped a group called "INFACT" organize an event to heckle at the Young Republican luncheon. We had a guy dressed as a giant cigarette and we held signs reading "Philip Morris for President" and yelling, "Yea! Big Tobacco Money! Yea!" We made it clear that the Republicans have taken more Big Tobacco Money from Philip Morris than from any other corporation or PAC. (This event was a lot of fun. The cops even told us privately that they were with us on this.) Later, we went to a parade/protest against police brutality and the death penalty that converged on the police headquarters. On Monday, we spent all day in a march for the rights of the poor and homeless. That took us all through town, and that's how we all got badly sunburned. Tuesday, see above.
