Americans May Be Targets in S. Korea

There are "credible indications" that a student group intends to
kidnap a U.S. service member, according to an e-mail sent from U.S.
Forces Korea to military commanders. No new security measures have
been put in place, but Americans are advised to avoid large
demonstrations and be aware of their surroundings.

Military Recruitment Climbing Up

For the first time since 1997, the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines
are expected to meet their enlistment goals this year, officials said,
crediting an unprecedented ad campaign, more creative use of the
Internet, more recruiters and a host of incentives.

Soldiers Are Fit to Fight Fires

More than 300 Army, National Guard and Air Force Reserve personnel
are helping federal and local firefighters battle blazes in several
western states, where the worst wildfire season in four years is underway.

DoD Aims To Replace Food Stamps

DoD officials announced on July 28 that service members who qualify
for food stamps -- and some who don't -- may soon receive debit cards
to use in commissaries.

National Guard cadre stands mobilized this week to support local
police operations at the Republican National Convention, which kicks
off today in Philadelphia.

Cohen may OK Missile Defense System

Judging by recent comments, Defense Secretary William Cohen appears
to be leaning toward recommending that President Clinton take the
first step toward deploying a national missile defense system.

Bringing Them Home At Last

When remains of American service members are recovered, officials at
the Army's Central Identification Laboratory at Hickam Air Force Base
take over the task of identification.
