This whole deal is REALLY disturbing. I've checked it out, and found the following: I downloaded VisualRoute from http://techsearch.cnet.com/search?curl=1,0,0-0-0&partner=techsearch&cat=103&; timeout=3&tag=&qt=visualroute&cn=&ca=0 This software maps the route information takes in your web-browsing. (It's free for 30 days.) I then browsed away. Generally the Internet does an impressive job of routing things efficiently. For example, browsing from here in San Jose to Free Republic, which is served here in Northern California, takes just a few hops on the Internet, and the total distance traveled is short. Similarly for other sites here in the Bay Area. Ditto the Drudge Report, which is served in Southern California. And so on. However, browsing to the encryption tools folks at http://www.pgp.com (served in Santa Clara, perhaps 10-15 miles away) causes a hop to Beltsville, Md. There are a few other sites that cause the same detour to the same city. All the detoured site are, shall we say, of potential interest to the Government. I'd had the impression that Carnivore was monitoring email. I believe there is reason to suspect that it--or something similar--sniffs web-browsing too. Of course, there may be other interpretations.
