GENETIC TESTING LAW IS THE STRICTEST YET
On Thursday, the Massachusetts Senate passed what is considered
to be among the strongest genetic privacy laws in the nation,
according to a UPI report. It prohibits against genetic
discrimination in banking, housing, health insurance and
employment, and allows patients to control who has access to
results of their genetic tests. Life insurance companies opposed
the bill, arguing that they needed genetic information to better
calculate the risks of insurance coverage, and lawmakers
accommodated the industry by denying patients permission to block
life insurers from their genetic records. The legislature also
set up a commission to study this issue. The law was prompted by
recent advances in the mapping of the human genome. "It became
pretty clear this was serious business, that it was 21st-century
technology that needed consumer protections," said Senate
Majority Leader Linda J. Melconian, D-Springfield. She said the
measure "sets the prototype for the rest of the nation" to ban
genetic discrimination."
