Novartis drops genetically altered food in Belgium, Netherlands

The Associated Press

BASEL, Switzerland (August 5, 2000 5:44 p.m. EDT
http://www.nandotimes.com) - Novartis AG, one of the world's leading
biotechnology companies, has stopped using genetically altered
ingredients in its foods in Belgium and the Netherlands.

A company spokesman said Friday that the move had been made in
response to consumer concerns in the two countries. He said it had not
been adopted worldwide, as was suggested in a company letter made
public by the environmental group Greenpeace.

The Basel-based giant announced last year it had no plans to use
genetically altered ingredients in its Gerber baby foods - the biggest brand
in the United States - fearing a potential backlash from concerned parents.

The company also makes Ovaltine drink mix, health foods and certain
medical nutrition foods used in hospitals.

Greenpeace, which campaigns against genetically altered crops,
published a letter from the Novartis Consumer Health division in Belgium
stating that the company stopped producing food containing genetically
altered ingredients in its own brands June 30. As published, the letter said
Novartis would "take the necessary measures to avoid the use of
genetically altered organisms in our products throughout the world."

The letter said that the company had instructed its suppliers to stop using
genetically altered organisms at all stages of production starting June 30.

The Novartis spokesman said the comments applied only to the Belgian
and Dutch markets, and specifically to a cereal bar that was being phased
out.
