Oscar nominee faces pot charge in Calgary

A man immortalized in Hollywood films as a dope-smoking, motorcycle-riding
hippie will visit Calgary in September to face a marijuana possession charge.

Dennis Hopper, co-star of the critically acclaimed Easy Rider, was
allegedly caught with a small quantity of marijuana at Calgary
International Airport last October.

Gordon Luchia, an official with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency,
confirmed Hopper was turned over to RCMP on Oct.10, after he was allegedly
caught with the drug.

Hopper is charged with possession of a substance under the Narcotic Control
Act.

The maximum penalty is a $1, 000 fine, or imprisonment for no more than six
months, or both.

The 63-year-old star was slated to appear in provincial court Wednesday,
but asked local lawyer Paul Brunnen to attend on his behalf. The two have
never met. Brunnen could not be reached for comment.

Brunnen originally applied to have his client involved in an alternative
measures program, which would see the actor diverted from the
criminal court system and into the community where, if determined to be
guilty, would be assigned community service work instead of a fine or
jail. He also would have been spared a criminal record in Canada.

That application was rejected because Hopper lives in Venice, Calif.

Hopper's publicist couldn't be reached for comment.

At the time of the incident Hopper was in and around Calgary shooting the
movie Knockaround Guys. Filming locations for the yet-to-be released flick
included Delia, Bassano and Drumheller.

Hollywood producer Lawrence Bender was at the helm for the movie, which
also stars John Malkovich, Seth Green and Canadian actor Berry Pepper.

[snip about movie.....]

The charismatic Hopper has long been known as a proponent of the counter
culture and has often expressed his desire to legalize pot.

[snip movie career...]

He is expected to be in Calgary Sept. 1 to enter a plea on the charge.
