Russia denies using sedative to silence Kursk mourner

MURMANSK, Russia (August 24, 2000 5:47 p.m. EDT
http://www.nandotimes.com) - Russian naval authorities on Thursday
denied media reports that the mother of a Kursk submariner had
involuntarily been given a sedative injection while questioning deputy prime
minister Ilya Klebanov about the tragedy.

"These claims are absurd, I'd be surprised if there had been an injection
purely to keep her from talking," navy spokesman Vladimir Navrotsky said.

"Probably the woman was worked up by her emotions and because of the
conditions in the crowded hall," he added.

Some 500 relatives and friends of the 118 seamen who died in the August
12 disaster had gathered August 18 at the naval base of Vidyayevo, near
Murmansk, to receive counselling and support.

Clearly overcome by grief, the woman was filmed as she shouted at the
deputy prime minister who has been leading the investigation into the
submarine disaster.

In the incident caught on film a medical officer approached the woman from
behind but the footage did not explicitly show an injection being
administered.

The woman collapsed into the arms of medical officials a short while later.

The incident has been widely broadcast in the Western media with the
implication that it represents a throwback to the Soviet-era methods of
repression of dissidents involving the use of drugs.

A witness at the scene, Yelena Alexeyevna, said there had been many
medical personnel at the meeting, but that she had not seen an injection
administered to the distraught woman.

"I saw the event. The woman in question was the mother of a member of
the Kursk crew. She rose, went up to Klebanov, obviously to say something
to him. But when she saw the indifference in his eyes, she just snapped,"
said Alexeyevna, who was accompanying a friend who lost her husband in
the tragedy.

"She started to yell at the top of her voice, the soldiers wanted to take her
out of the room and offered to give her a sedative," she said.

"The woman didn't let the doctors give her the needle and she went back to
her place. She was really on edge," Alexeyevna said, adding that other
women in the room were similarly wrought.

A medical official for the Murmansk region, Arkady Rubin, told AFP that
Soviet style repressive tactics using medicine do not exist anymore. "We
abandoned punitive psychology a long time ago," he said.

The state of shock for those with relatives aboard the Kursk has been so
severe that even now, days after the tragedy, some refuse to believe that
their son or husband is really dead -- an illusion nurtured by the fact that no
bodies have yet been recovered from the shattered submarine.

Thursday, during a ceremony setting the first stone of a monument to the
Kursk victims, several women fainted and had to be taken away by
ambulance.
