The REAL culprit is an economic system that regards the forests as resources to
be exploited rather than as our global heritage, to be preserved and protected.
The National Forest System was created to be a source of timber in a country
whose land had been ninety percent logged off by 1900. While the reforestation
of North America is perhaps the single greatest environmental success story of
the 20th century (there is more land under forest east of the Mississippi than
there was in 1776), that reforestation was undertaken under false pretenses.
The purpose of the forests, as created by Gifford Pinchot and Theodore
Roosevelt, was not recreational hunting, or atmospheric regeneration, or
anything else that we associate the national forests with today...it was the
pursuit of profit, pure and simple. That harvesting of the new timber for
profit was delayed was due only to the unfortunate fact that the damn trees
didn't grow fast enough. Sure, blame Clinton--but also blame Bush, Reagan,
Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, Roosevelt, Hoover,
Coolidge, Harding, Wilson, and Cleveland, not to mention Georgia Pacific,
Weyerhaeuser, and Home Depot, because the fault lies ultimately in the system
itself and its underlying philosophy.
