Bush Blows Wind

Actually, most reporters are assholes.

THE faltering campaign of George W Bush suffered a fresh setback yesterday
when the Republican presidential candidate was heard on a microphone using a
vulgar term to describe an American reporter.

Leaning over to Dick Cheney, his running mate, during a Labour Day rally
outside Chicago, Mr Bush said: "There's Adam Clymer, major league asshole
from the New York Times." Mr Bush, who has repeatedly promised to "change the
tone" in Washington, went on to tell supporters that it was "time to get some
plain-spoken folks" in the American capital.

He apparently did not know the microphone was switched on, a mistake that
Ronald Reagan made during the 1984 election campaign when he joked before a
radio broadcast: "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that
I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in
five minutes."

Mr Bush's lapse seemed to be an indication of the pressure on him after a
surge by his Democratic rival, Al Gore, that has left him trailing in opinion
polls. It also coincided with a sharply negative turn in Mr Bush's rhetoric
as he lambasted Mr Gore for failing to accept his proposals on a programme of
presidential debates and accused him of "Washington doublespeak".

Mr Clymer does not normally cover Mr Bush but wrote a story in yesterday's
issue relating how a group of seven political scientists had each predicted a
November win for Mr Gore. During his father's losing 1992 presidential
campaign, Mr Bush confronted a reporter and swore at him. He said in an
interview with the Telegraph in July: "I didn't behave well at times with the
press. I fully recognise that."

Mr Cheney was asked later if "calling people names" was part of the campaign.
"I won't respond to it," he told a television producer. "The governor made a
private comment to me." Mr Bush's spokesman, Karen Hughes, said the remark
was "a whispered aside to his running mate". She said: "It was not intended
as a public comment. It was a reference to a series of articles the governor
felt was unfair."

Although the two candidates have vowed to run positive campaigns, each has
indicated that he has little respect for the other. At Gore rallies,
supporters wear badges and T-shirts with slogans such as "I Will Never Vote
for the Son of a Bush" or "Lick Bush and Dick". Mr Bush is struggling to
prevent Mr Gore making policy issues the key to the campaign.

One Bush adviser said: "If it got to be about specific issue position, you're
playing on Gore's turf. If you make issues about broader realities and
broader dynamics, you're on our turf."
