Gore takes on Big Music; proposes Napster benefit
PITTSBURGH - Appearing before a rally of union members, Al Gore
today vowed to fight against the "thuggery" of the "Big Music"
industry and provide a free music plan that would be available to
all Americans who voluntarily register their computer hard drives
with the federal government. Under Gore's plan all musicians who
wanted their music heard would surrender their copyright
ownership to the government, who in turn would make the music
available through the Napster software program, but charge no
fee.
"My focus is on working families: middle-class families -- the
people who pay the taxes, bear the burdens, and live the American
dream," said Gore. "And I am not satisfied when you have to
struggle to afford the rising cost of compact discs. I am not
satisfied when the big music companies call all the shots,
instead of our youngsters and families."
Gore attacked George W. Bush for supporting an approach that
would leave half of Americans without a Napster benefit.
"Instead of using the nation's prosperity to make sure every
American can have free music, Bush has proposed a $1.6 trillion
dollar tax cut to benefit the wealthy music industry executives
and rock musicians," Gore charged.
Gore cited an example to illustrate how his Napster benefit plan
would help American's obtain free music on the internet.
"A college student at Florida State University receives $36,000 a
year from government student loans," Gore instructed. "The
student uses the loans to purchase some bitchin stereo equipment
and a totally rad computer system, leaving them without the funds
necessary to purchase new compact discs."
But under the Gore Napster benefit plan, this student would save
$4,900 in music costs, compared to the Bush plan which would not
only fail to provide free music, but would also take away their
student loans.
