AUDREY'S MISSILES
A weekly newsletter dedicated to the peaceful
reform of the United States government.
IT'S OUR FAULT
The newly elected president of Mexico is using Bill Clinton's old
argument. The drug problem cannot be solved because too many people in the
United States are buying illegal drugs. Nothing can be done about the drug
problem until the market dries up. And, furthermore, it is not the
pushers, but the parents who are to blame for introducing children to
drugs! (That one made national TV!) It is the consumer who has created
this vast, illegal market for the producers and traffickers to
exploit. The consumers, the market, that is where the problem lies. The
victims are to blame for the crime.
The consumption of illegal drugs world-wide has been the cause of
untold human misery and death, but heroin and cocaine are not the only
products that are wrecking havoc on their victims. The Indians of northern
Colombia are begging for help as the paramilitaries, the developers, and
the oil companies cooperate to drive them from their lands. We know what
the Gulf War did to the people of Iraq and what suffering is still being
caused because they are sitting on top of one of the largest oil pools in
the world. What has not been reported in the mainstream press is the
following allegation from a Free Burma activist concerning the activities
of UNOCAL in Burma: "Enough is enough. UNOCAL is now tied to rape, to
murder, to forced labor and forced relocation,....UNOCAL is the only big US
company still in Burma, not to mention the best corporate friend of
Afghanistan's Taliban. Now is the time for Congress to assert that slave
labor is unacceptable for American companies by targeting UNOCAL for
sanctions, and now is the time for the Attorney General of California to
take legal steps to dissolve this California-based corporate monster." Of
course, UNOCAL has been careful to use others to do the dirty work, but
claims of ignorance just do not wash. Nor do they wash the hands of the
oil companies who control the newly developed oil fields in Southern
Sudan. There are two fields there being exploited by a consortium:
China's CNPC, Malaysia's Petronas, and Talisman of Canada, with minimal
participation from Sudan's Sudapet oil company. Vast "blocks" of land have
been conceded to the Canadian, Chinese and Malaysian companies as well as
Qatar's Gulf Petroleum Company and Total of France. What about the people
who live there? Well, the Khartoum government has been busy bombing them,
killing both civilians and their livestock in an attempt to drive them from
their homes. The immediate goal is to clear about a sixty mile area around
the oil fields. There have been reports that China has sent large numbers
of "security forces" to protect the oil fields, but China denies this and
aid workers in the area have not reported seeing anything which would tend
to confirm the story. However, it is almost certain that all those with a
financial interest in Sudanese oil will cooperate to remove the native
Sudanese Christians in the South. Like the Colombian natives, the Southern
Sudanese people are begging for international help, but since China is a
member of the Security Council with a veto power United Nations
intervention by that body is not possible, and press coverage of the war on
the civilians there has been and will probably continue to be suppressed in
this country.
If we accept the drug trafficker's argument that the consumer is
to blame for the illegal drug trade, then it should follow that we must
also blame the consumer for the collusion of despotic governments and the
oil companies who are cooperating to cause the genocide of the people who
own the lands where the oil has been found. If we accept the reasoning of
the illegal drug traders that the drug problem is the fault of consumers
then we must also admit that it follows that every person who is buying and
using petroleum products is responsible for the behavior of those who
exploit the oil fields. It is the fault of the consumer. Why would Bill
Clinton and Vincente Fox make use of such an argument?
