FIDEL AND FRIENDS
Bill Clinton this week became the first American president ever
to shake hands with Fidel Castro, and then the White House
promptly lied about it. Not only can't you teach old dogs new
tricks, you can't break them of bad habits, either.
And thank goodness for Fidel, too. He's in town for the U.N.
jubilee that's now winding down - and, as the senior member of
the world body's blood-soaked-tyrant caucus, his presence has
coaxed out some vintage Rudy Giuliani.
No hobnobbing with murderers, kleptocrats and duded-up thugs for
me, said Hizzoner - by way of explaining his absence from the
cocktail circuit.
"Fidel Castro is a murderer," says the mayor. Just so.
What a constrast with the mush from the wife of the First
Handshaker: "I would like to see changes that will give the Cuban
people the, you know, same rights that now people all over our
hemisphere have to freely choose their own leaders," said
Hillary!
(Ah, what a campaign that would have been.)
But while Rudy's been laying low, his presence was obvious in
other ways.
Traffic has been a royal pain in the keister all week (and should
be through tomorrow) but it's hard to imagine any other city in
the world hosting 150 heads of state - including the
above-mentioned blood-soaked tyrants - and pulling it off so
smoothly.
Of course, it helped that the amalgamation of nihilists,
malcontents and morons that plagued Seattle, Philadelphia and
L.A. earlier this year took a pass on the Millennium Summit. But
why? We bet they stayed home because there's no hope of provoking
the NYPD into excesses with exaggerated street theater.
And, so far as is known, no head of state or ranking diplomat got
mugged this week. We're not so sure that would have been the case
seven years ago.
Meanwhile, the Rev. Joan Brown Campbell hosted Fidel & Co. at the
Riverside Church last night - which, of course, is her right and
privilege. A little odd, though, that someone so reflexively
condemnatory of Giuliani and the NYPD in the wake of tragic
accidents like the death of Amadou Diallo feels the need to suck
up so shamelessly to the architect of Havana's 40-year agony.
And while Bill Clinton was sufficiently ashamed of the Fidel
handshake that he tried to lie his way out of it, Hillary
couldn't bring herself even to criticize the Cuban directly.
What is it about Castro and Democrats, anyway?
