the Constitution and the law ought to set the example themselves of
observing the Constitution and the law." --Calvin Coolidge {} "It is

UPRIGHT

"So Al Gore is threatening government sanctions against the
entertainment industry for marketing violence to kids. That's
chilling. That's cynical. That's brilliant." --Rod Dreher {} "We
[Americans] must disbar you to tell the world that a man's word still
means something in America, even if he is the president." --John N.
Doggett {} "Carrying today's idea of freedom to its logical
conclusion would plunge us into the depth of moral chaos." --Charles
Colson {} "To say that this distinct person has no rights is not a

people is a totalitarian principle, not a democratic one."
--Archbishop Elden F. Curtiss on the Democrats' abortion-on-demand

specificity and detail, but apparently he didn't mean it to apply to
his own tax plan." --House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Archer  {}

Tradition, a national Jewish public policy group. {} "Our kids are
not really being overcome by piety. This is not a major problem in
American life right now." --William Bennett {} "Abstract language

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"Did you know that there are two Al Gores running for President?"
--New York Post

______--------********O********--------______
BODY POLITIC

On the political front...

>From the Bush campaign, still playing Al Gore's hand of cards, W.
spent the week talking about health care and prescription drugs. The
upcoming Olympics will give Bush a bit of respite from the media.
He'd best use the diversion to determine how, in two weeks, he will
emerge and take back the debate. At the moment, the Bush strategy
seems to be focussed on outspending Gore -- and that is, decidedly,
not a winning strategy.

The debate debate is over. George Bush will meet Gore in Boston
October 3, Winston-Salem October 11 and St. Louis October 17. Dick
Cheney will debate Lieberman in Danville, KY, on October 5. Bush
spokesman Ari Fleischer said they want a "free-flowing, spontaneous
format instead of the rehearsed, wooden formats where candidates are
rewarded for memorizing 30-second sound bites."

Memo to W.: At the top of Gore-Lieberman's Web site and every
Demo-lition e-mail are the words, "JOIN THE FIGHT." In the preparation
for the debates, remove your head from your "tit-for-tat" strategy to
counter each and every Gore income redistribution scheme, and take
Gore up on his challenge to fight. It is long past time for you to
start talking about the great quest for liberty, freedom and personal
responsibility, and the fact that limited government is essential to
that quest. It is high time you took Gore to task on competing visions
for America's future. Stop acting like a rear echelon bean counter,
get out of the trench, and FIGHT! And take this bit of advice from old
Teddy Roosevelt: "Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to
avoid hitting; but never hit soft!" Beyond the debates, it is way late
in the game -- better make Schwarzkopf your chief of staff and pull a
"Hail Mary"!

Observation Points:
"Bush complained last week that Washington Republicans who were
fretting publicly about the state of his campaign were like soldiers
jumping out of the foxhole before the first shot is fired. That was
arrogant and counterproductive -- and yet another sign that Bush's
nice-guy image may bear as much resemblance to reality as Al Gore's
populist pose." --John Podhoretz {} "When the issues are presented
in a straightforward manner, it becomes apparent to Americans that
Gore's ideology is not in the best interest of America. Bush would be
well advised to show Gore's hypocrisy, rather than validate it."
--Angela R. Wheeler {} "Why doesn't Bush have more to fall back on?
I think we all know the answer. He and his team call it compassionate
conservatism, which on closer inspection is nothing more than
conservatism lite or a conservatism that dares not speak its name or
conservatism repackaged in a kinder, gentler wrapping -- in short, a
conservatism that caves under the first sign of pressure." --Wladyslaw
Pleszczynsk {} "If Bush wants to do it all with a smile, fine. But
if the next two months are only about personality, Gore will win."
--Mona Charen

>From Amerika2000 -- the Demo-lition...

Remember Watergate? Apparently some Demo-plumbers "acquired" quite a
bit of proprietary debate preparation material from the Bush campaign
and sent it to former Rep. Tom Downey, who was scheduled to play the
part of George Bush in Al Gore's debate preparations. Downey
immediately turned the material over to the FBI, saying, "I knew from
looking at it that this was stuff I should not see. This was their
most sensitive stuff." He has recused himself from any further contact
with the debate preparations. Gore chairman William Daley called Bush
chairman Don Evans to notify him about the "mysterious" package. An
investigation is underway....

Isn't it interesting that the Aldroids would choose a person of such
high character to play the part of George Bush against their man....

Continuing the hijack of George Bush's female voters, Albert Gore
appeared with Ms. Okra Winfrey this week, so she could peddle him some
soft questions designed to highlight his "feminine side." "Gore was
the therapist, the advice giver, the master of interpersonal prattle,"
notes the Wall Street Journal's Dorothy Rabinowitz. It will be
interesting to contrast her questions to Gore with her questions to
George Bush when he makes his scheduled appearance -- since Winfrey
has personally contributed $16,000 to the Clintonistas. (Perhaps Gore
should have challenged Bush to debate him on Oprah!)

Speaking of "feminine sides," even the "entertainment" cartel's most
egregious peddlers of pornography know that Gore-Lieberman's
pontification about cleaning up their racket is a ruse. National
Review brings to our attention a meeting of the nation's largest
association of Internet pornographers, getting underway in New Orleans
today. First item on their agenda, a seminar called, "Adult Community
Meeting: Vote Democratic!" The seminar is described as follows: "Join
respected attorney Paul Cambria for a special 'Adult Community
Meeting' to address concerns over the upcoming Presidential election.
A Republican or other conservative President and Congress could
greatly hinder the success and growth of the adult Internet industry.
Don't underestimate the ramifications of right wing government on your
e-business or your power as a webmaster. As an individual who does
business with hundreds -- even thousands -- of people on the World
Wide Web, you can make a difference. Come together with other
webmasters and industry leaders and learn what you can do to safeguard
the future of the adult Internet industry."

Translation: Vote for Gore-Lieberman and keep the pornography flowing
to anyone old enough to turn on a computer!

And, about those wealthy Veeps, you have heard all about Mr. Cheney's
success in the private sector and the $18 million in stock he sold
before joining the Bush ticket. But have you heard about the $48
million estate controlled by Joseph Lieberman, which evicted a female
tenant from one of its properties, then re-admitted her when she filed
suit against Lieberman for injuries she received on the property?
Perhaps when the suit is settled, she can be evicted again and Mrs.
Tracy Mayberry and her disabled husband and children, previously
evicted from Gore's tenant slum, can move in. Kinda paints a "slumlord
ticket," don't you think?

Observation Points:
"The most striking aspect of the hour-long 'Oprah' interview was how
Gore revealed himself as the perfect political representation of the
Oprah era -- how his rhetoric and thinking are a perfect fit with the
preachy, relentlessly positive New Age-speak that Winfrey has spent
her career popularizing. ... 'We are spiritual beings having a human
experience,' Gore said as he attempted to explain how he believes the
greatest challenge facing America is a quest to find greater meaning
in life. ... The scary part is that Gore really means it." -- John
Podhoretz

In other political news...

HILLARY!, The Village Matriarch, showed up for a debate with her
opponent, Rick Lazio -- who summarily disposed of her. "At the heart
of the campaign are two critical issues, character and trust," Rep.
Lazio said Wednesday night. "My opponent has talked and talked, but
she's done nothing for New York. I've delivered for New York."

HILLARY! tried to pin Lazio with, "You voted to shut the government
down."

Memo to HILLARY!: We checked, and in 1995 the Republicans actually
voted a bill to keep government funded until the budget could be
resolved. It was your hubby who vetoed that bill and padlocked the
doors. Of course, your media made those "Gingrich Republicans" out to
be the culprits.

Lazio has a steep road to climb. He is opposed by both HILLARY! and
all her White House minions. For example, in late 1999 there were more
than 26 instances in which her campaign contributors were awarded
sleepovers in the Lincoln "Motel Six" Bedroom or at Camp David. "We
have friends and supporters come and...spend the night with us that we
are getting to know and who like spending time with us," Ms.
Rodham-Clinton said. "I don't see what's news about that."

Observation points:
"Mr. Lazio came across as a smoother, more aggressive performer."
--New York Times {} "Lazio kicked it out of the park. He had
Hillary dumbfounded on several occasions. Walked across the stage,
invading her 'personal space' and handed her a petition to disavow all
soft money. Dared her to sign it. She didn't, of course. Asked by
Russert at the end, if she had a life line call, who would it be? She
twinkled and said, 'You, Tim.' Lazio said, very quietly, 'My wife'."
--Lucianne Goldberg {} "The only obvious thing about last night's
debate was that Mrs. Clinton has spent 25 years married to Bill
Clinton -- and has learned exactly nothing from the master of
dissimulation. The debate was a disaster for her." -- John Podhoretz

And another note on New York politics.... Hundreds of elected
Democrats across the country have switched to the Republican Party
since the election of Clinton-Gore in 1992. However, New York Rep.
Mike Forbes is the only Republican member of Congress who switched to
the Democrats. Tuesday, Forbes lost in the Democrat primary to Ms.
Regina Seltzer, a 71-year-old former librarian, who raised only 3% as
much money as his $1.4 million war chest. Poetic justice, indeed.

DEZINFORMATSIA

"To deny Democrats credit for the prosperity and accuse them of
driving the country 'downhill,' [George Bush] backdates the boom and
pretends it began before Clinton took office." --Eric Pooley in Time
**Memo to Mr. Pooley: As we have noted many times in The Federalist,
the current economic expansion began 21 months before Bill Clinton
took office. And, as the Media Research Center reminded us, even that
venerable staple of the left, the New York Times, said in an editorial
earlier this year, "except for a mild recession at the beginning of
the 1990s, the American economy has enjoyed uninterrupted growth for
almost 18 years." That's what we call "backdating"! {} "No Peter
(Jennings). No Dan (Rather). No Tom (Brokaw). Just Ted (Turner)."
--Narration from Disney videotape protesting powers accrued in the AOL
Time Warner merger ** They all timeshare the same brain, so who would
notice?

______--------********O********--------______
SOCIOCRATS

"There was no handshake." --White House Mouth Joe Lockhart, when asked
about Clinton's handshake with Communist tyrant Fidel Castro.
**Actually, there was! {} "In politics, the phrase 'pro-life' is
shorthand for opposition to abortion." --Adam Nagourney with a
brilliant observation! {} "Eddie Eagle is Joe Camel with feathers."
--New York State Senate Demo Eric Schneiderman, after a NYC police
officer showed an NRA gun safety video featuring "Eddie Eagle."

______--------********O********--------______
VILLAGE IDIOTS

>From the "Village Academic Curriculum" File: What can you learn for
$25,000 a year at "better" colleges and universities? NYU,
Northwestern, Columbia, and other notable institutions of "higher
learning" are now offering classes in "pornography studies." And
pornographers are in demand on the porn lecture circuit. Hustler
magazine's Larry Flynt "lectured" students at Georgetown University
earlier this month. Harvard Divinity School's dean was forced to
resign after pornography was found on his computer, The Boston Globe
reported today. Harvard University asked for Ronald F. Thiemann's
resignation last fall for "conduct unbecoming a dean" after the matter
was brought to the attention of President Neil L. Rudenstine, the
newspaper reported, citing unidentified Harvard sources.

SHORT CUTS

"That's a personal shot. While [Mr. Wellstone] was doing real college
wrestling, I was serving in the real United States military." --Gov.
Jesse Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, after Minnesota Demo Sen. Paul
Wellstone compared his own college wrestling days to Ventura's
"professional wrestling" career. **We think this dispute should be
settled on a mat before a national television audience. Our money is
on Ventura! {} "If issues are your thing, though, as I see it, the
three big issues in this campaign so far are 1) prescription drugs, 2)
education and 3) campaign finance reform. (If I have enough of 1, I
couldn't care less about 2 and 3.)" --Tony Kornheiser {} "...[I]f
Gore is elected Lieberman will be the first Jew to work under a
president since Monica Lewinsky." --Lyn Nofziger

Night Lines:

Leno.... Nancy Reagan wrote a book containing Ronald's love letters
to her. Hillary Clinton is doing something similar now. She has
collected over 100 letters to Bill from 30 women that she will put in
a book. .... Al Gore has been accused of drawing up campaign plans
and stands on issues through polling data in order to get more votes.
Gore said that was outrageous and 73.8 percent of Americans think that
too. .... Did you hear about Clinton's lawyer? Apparently Bill
Clinton had his lawyer tell Hillary about his sexual conduct with
Monica Lewinsky. Bill can handle the lying, just can't handle telling
the truth! .... George W. Bush said he is not afraid of an open
debate. The only thing he's afraid of is an open mike.

Letterman.... Al Gore appeared on "Oprah" yesterday. Hey, Al, you go,
girl! He told Oprah his favorite food was Chinese. That's also his
favorite type of campaign funding. .... I'm sure you've all seen the
clip of George W. trying to pronounce the word subliminal. He stumbled
several times and kept saying "subliminable." Kinda makes me wonder if
he's "electabable."
