Federalist #00-40 will be in circulation on 03 October 00.) In the news this week, you may recall Bill Clinton promised America "the most ethical administration in history." He certainly delivered the "slickest administration in history." The office of Independent Counsel Robert Ray ended its six-year investigation of the Clinton regime. Former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker and 13 other Clinton associates were convicted and sent up the river. But Mr. Ray says of the big fish, "The office determined that the evidence was insufficient to prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that either...Clinton knowingly participated in any criminal conduct." In other words, the Clintons' political cutouts provided them plausible deniability, insulating them from prosecution. Attempting to spin Mr. Ray's investigation into a "not guilty" verdict, Senate Demo-gogue Tom Daschle said, "I'm disappointed that after all these years and all the trials and tribulation and the pain and suffering...it's taken this long to find out that nothing was ever done wrongly." Of course, Daschle knows better. As the Wall Street Journal notes, "The first conclusion to be drawn from all this is that the cover-up worked. The Clintons and their lawyers established an ethos of stonewalls, shady statements, slick lawyering, witness intimidation, and rhetorical assaults on public servants. The key players either kept quiet or were completely discredited by a brutal White House attack machine. ... The result was a series of investigations yielding evidence 'insufficient to prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt.' This is not to say no evidence." Mr. Ray's office is just the latest of the record number of independent counsels to conclude criminal investigations of the Clintonistas. Perhaps the most noted of the inquiries was that of the Clinton-Gore quid pro quo illegal campaign payola, which resulted in 22 indictments, 12 convictions, 72 House and Senate witnesses pleading the Fifth and 18 witnesses fleeing the country to avoid testifying. Thus far, independent counsel investigations have netted 32 Clintonista convictions. That is an important fact to keep in mind when Bill Clinton says, "The record of this administration is his record," when campaigning for Albert Gore. Latenight TV host (and noted political scholar) David Letterman concludes, "Clinton is campaigning for Al Gore...and Clinton says that Al Gore was involved in everything this administration did. I'm no legal expert, but I believe the term for that is 'accessory'." In other news from the "most ethical administration," Ms. Kathleen Willey (Schwicker), another of Clinton's sexual assault victims, filed a civil lawsuit in U.S. District Court charging Bill and Ms. Rodham-Clinton with violating the Privacy Act by releasing documents from her government files to undermine her reputation and credibility as a witness. Quote of the week... "Clinton is to Nixon what the Al Capone was to a kid stealing hub caps." --Don Feder **Of course, Capone was never convicted of any of the heinous crimes he committed, but for "income tax evasion." On cross-examination... Hate crimes? "How can 'hate crimes' laws be constitutional, when the 14th Amendment specifies 'equal protection of the laws' for all, not special protection for special groups?" asks Thomas Sowell. Balint Vaszonyi adds, "Let us summarize. Desecrating the flag, something that offends America and Americans in general, is the exercise of free speech. On the other hand, uttering words of dislike about someone may well be considered an act, a criminal act, a culpable act. Are we setting the Constitution on its head?" Q: Where does the U.S. Constitution specify that the central government can single out any group for "greater protection" than any other group? Exposing the BIG lie... "In a statement made to Esquire Magazine a few years back, Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., called Clinton an 'unusually good liar.' Is his second-in-command an unusually bad one? ... Gore's record of statements that don't square with the truth could mar his run for the White House." --Daniel J. Murphy **Not likely.... Clinton and Gore have so desensitized the American public to the issues of honesty and character that these are now minor qualities for a presidential candidate when the economy is flush. >From the "Trickle-Down Ethics" Files... The entertainment cartel has now surpassed the trial lawyer cartel in graft for Gore-Lieberman. But the Vice Prevaricator and his hypocritical sidekick are still under fire from their bedfellows for the faux threat to "clean up" Hollywood. At another major payola swap meet Monday night, Lieberman assured their Hollywonk financiers, "We're both fans of the products that come out of the entertainment industry.... I promise you this, that we will never, never put the government in the position of telling you by law, through law, what to make." Gore added, "I know a lot of you will be standing with us." They collected $4.2 million. Economist and cultural observer Walter Williams notes, "What Big Entertainment has done to America's children makes what Big Tobacco has done pale by comparison. ... I'm wondering why the White House and Congress are not calling upon Attorney General Janet Reno to sue and try to reach a multi-billion dollar settlement with Big Entertainment like they did with Big Tobacco. ... The FTC report suggests that...it's not Big Gun that's responsible for causing all the murder and mayhem...it's Big Entertainment. ... I'm guessing that we'll see no government suits against Big Entertainment. Why? Big Entertainment and Big Government are allies -- they both contribute to one another's agenda." Bill Bennett, who was in partnership against Hollywood smut with the old "pre-Gore" version of Joe Lieberman, now says, "I praised Al Gore for selecting him as his running mate and have defended Joe Lieberman from critics on the left and the right. However, recent events have caused me to reevaluate my opinion. He remains my friend, but I cannot defend this [pandering to the purveyors of the 'Silver Sewer']. I'm deeply disappointed." Mr. Bennett concluded, "When the money comes out and you get soft, and the voice changes and the tone changes and the words change, then that's called selling out." Bennett also noted the "Christian bashing" at Monday's fund-raiser. Their Jewish host, homosexual advocate Larry David, told Gore and Lieberman, "Like [Texas Gov. George W.] Bush, I too found Christ in my 40s. He came into my room one night, and I said: 'What, no call? You just pop in?' " Of that "humor," Mr. Bennett said, "[That's] ridiculing Christianity and reducing it to the level of Borscht-belt humor. You've got to walk out." It may come as a surprise to Mr. Bennett that Mr. Lieberman has "sold out," but it should come as no surprise that Albert Gore would laugh his way through an evening of such defamation from Hollywood glitterati. Two months ago at the "National Tribute to President Clinton," Village celeb Robin Williams "entertained" Al and Tipper using the words "f--k" and "s--t" repeatedly and then noted, "Whoa, there's a child in the front row; he's learning new words!" Indeed, there were children in the front row, and thousands more in other rows, as the event was advertised as a "family affair." After the Vice Prevaricator spoke, Williams proclaimed, "Sweet Jesus, Al, you were possessed." There was no protest from the Gores, as the event broke all fund-raising records -- Al "Campaign-Finance-Reform" Gore pocketed $26 million for the Demos in one night. What tribute! And a footnote on Gore's remarks to his entertainment cartel benefactors.... He lamented: "We've been through a lot. For me, things changed after the assassination of President Kennedy. ... Then Nixon was elected. Ugghhh. The Vietnam War unfolded. I went to the Vietnam War. ... Some of the people with the highest ideals, the best hearts, the loftiest dreams, are the ones who are most reluctant to get involved in politics or the political process." Memo to Al: First, Nixon did not "unfold" the Vietnam War, JFK and his successor, LBJ, did. Second, you spent most of your Vietnam tour of duty MIA -- you went home early to attend Vanderbilt's divinity school where you flunked five of the eight classes you took before dropping out. Third, you seem to suggest, circuitously, that you are among those with "the highest ideals, the best hearts, the loftiest dreams." Ugghhh, Al! News from the Swamp... In an end run around the Constitution's assignment to Congress (in perpetuity) "to regulate commerce with foreign nations," the House of Lords voted to give China permanent normal trade relations (PNTR), or the perpetual gift of America's best trading partner privileges. Some claim that more trade with China will lead to better human rights for those in China. But consider the following.... The vote coincided with this editorial from the Washington Post about 81- year-old Catholic Bishop Zeng Jingmu who, once again, has been arrested by the Red tyrants. "Bishop Zeng has been guilty of a single crime all along: He is a Catholic believer. He refuses to submit to Communist atheism or to the control of the Catholic Patriotic Association, an alternative 'church' created by the regime.... He was imprisoned for a quarter-century beginning in 1958. In 1983, the Communists let him out - for one month. Then they jailed him for another eight years, until 1991. In 1996 -- at the age of 76 -- he was sentenced to three years of forced labor and reeducation. When he was released with six months still to run on that sentence, in 1998, the Clinton administration trumpeted the news as 'further evidence that the president's policy of engagement works'." In the House of Commons, the vote to fund the NEA at last year's level, $98.5 million, is being challenged by the Senate, which voted an increase of $7.4 million. A House-Senate conference committee is expected to settle this issue as early as today. Judicial Benchmarks... U.S. District Judge Walter Smith concurred, this week, with the findings of the Danforth inquiry earlier this year absolving the central government of any wrongdoing in the deaths of 80 men, women and children after the ATF's botched assault on their Waco, Texas cult compound in 1993. While their lunatic leader, David Koresh, most likely ordered the suicidal torching of his compound after months surrounded by para-military forces subjecting the group to psychological warfare, our entire nation should forever be ashamed of that day, and the events leading to it. We should be equally ashamed of the indiscriminate retaliation against the ATF -- the bombing of the Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 men, women and children. Regarding your IRS overpayment... "Three groups spend other people's money: children, thieves and politicians. All three need parental supervision." --Dick Armey >From the department of military readiness... "Readiness is not just equipment," said Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, appearing with George Bush and a host of military brass. "Readiness is people. And we have somebody [Mr. Bush] who is going to step up and has clearly recognized the problem." Gen. Colin Powell added: "It's time to face the reality that we have given our wonderful military force too many missions that we are not prepared to fund them for. I was shocked and deeply disappointed when the president's spokesman attacked Dick Cheney because he dared to tell the truth about the state of readiness. ... The ones who are attacking the military are those who pretend everything is OK. They want to pretend junior officers are not leaving at an alarming rate. They want to play 'let's pretend' that our aircraft operating levels...haven't been dropping precipitously in recent years. They want to play 'let's pretend' that Army training centers are not complaining that they can't do the mission anymore because they're underresourced. The time for pretending is over. The ones you can't fool are the troops." Mr. Bush summed up the crisis, "We cannot be all things to all people. We must be peacemakers, not peacekeepers." >From the states... After Jill and Michael Carroll decided to take their seven-year-old son off Ritalin, Child Protective Services took them to court "for educational neglect." Just a glimpse of "The Village" in all our future.... Around the world... Preparing to implement his "October surprise," Al "Looking-Presidential" Gore is warning that Yugoslav President Slobo Milosevic may declare himself the victor of Sunday's elections there -- regardless of the outcome. If the Bush v. Gore polls are close in late October, Slobo is toast! In other "peacemaker" news, fresh from his handshake with Fidel Castro, Bill Clinton is making plans to visit Vietnam in November, the first such visit by a U.S. president since the "end" of the Vietnam War. Culture comment... This month's "Dumbing Down" Award goes to John Wilson, the incoming Director of the National Education Association. Formerly a state union educrat in North Carolina, Wilson claimed, "The benefits of the reading, writing and math does [sic] not outweigh the need for [black and white] children to learn to work and play together." The NEA's news release says of Wilson's tenure there, "North Carolina is nationally known for its pre-eminence in education reform." Memo to the NEA: We checked, and North Carolina is ranked 48th out of 50 in SAT score achievement. A fine example of George W. Bush's "soft bigotry of low expectations." >From the "Politically Challenged" Files: This month's "Non Compos Mentis" award goes to Wal-Mart, which is pulling Maurice's famous barbecue sauce off its shelves in seven Southern states because a customer complained that the maker, a landmark South Carolina restaurateur, flies the South Carolina and Confederate battle flags at his restaurants. For our readers in "God's country," pick up your phones, and advise your local Wal-Mart that they could have informed the complainant that he or she did not have to purchase Maurice's barbecue sauce, and should take the complaint directly to Maurice. On the frontiers of junk science... The National Research Council issued a study, which concludes that discrepancies in surface and air temperatures cast serious doubt on the veracity of scientific models predicting global warming. "Reconciling Observations of Global Temperature Change" notes that satellite and atmospheric air temperature readings show warming over the last two decades, contrary to the global warming models regularly cited by Al Gore. John Wallace, professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, says, "I wouldn't go so far to say that models are wrong categorically, but what we're seeing is not consistent with what the models have been predicting greenhouse warming would look like." Of course, assuming there is a global warming phenomenon, it is an enormous scientific stretch to suggest "greenhouse gasses" are the cause rather than normal cycles of the solar system. And last, it is no wonder that Mr. Clinton, still looking for his legacy, is so enamored with his HILLARY!'s campaign.
