-Caveat Lector-

Nessie, I do indeed know how codenames are assigned. It USED to be the practice
to give projects names which had no relationship to their purpose. Today
codenames are used to BROADCAST a project's purpose. During WW2, operations had
names like TORCH and MARKET GARDEN, which gave no clue as to their intent. Even
operations devised during the '60s were disguised, like GARDEN PLOT. By the
1980s, however, codenames were used to proclaim loudly what they were intended
to do: DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM is the most egregious example. I suspect that
PYE WACKET falls into the latter category--a codename designed to suggest its
purpose. FYI, John Van Druten, author of *Bell, Book and Candle*, took the name
"Pyewacket" for the cat familiar from a list of witches' familiars, probably one
found in a standard history of witchcraft such as Montague Summers.

Second: I never heard of a novel titled *King Alfred*, so I'll have to accept
what you say on face value. Are you implying this could have in fact been an
intelligence op?

Third: As for the Association of the Sword, that was precisely my point. I
never heard of it, and was really puzzled to find it in the list of DIA reports.

Bob
