Some other cases to be decided by the Supreme Court in its 2000-2001 term,
which begins Monday:

--May private citizens use a federal law banning discrimination based on
national origin to challenge a state's "English only" policy? At issue is an
Alabama policy of offering written driver's license tests only in English.

--Can the government treat fathers and mothers differently in deciding
whether their children born out of wedlock and outside the country are U.S.
citizens? The sexual-equality case comes from Texas.

--Does disabled golfer Casey Martin have a legal right to ride in a golf
cart between shots at PGA Tour events? At issue is whether the Americans
with Disabilities Act applies to Martin's case.

--Can Congress bar groups funded by the Legal Services Corp. from filing
lawsuits that seek to change welfare laws? Legal aid lawyers and clients
challenged such a restriction enacted in 1997, saying it violated
free-speech and associational rights protected by the Constitution.

--Can states require congressional candidates to push for term limits or be
branded as opponents on the election ballot? A lower court said Missouri's
"scarlet letter" law violated candidates' free-speech rights.

--May the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulate the use of land containing
waters that are home to migrating birds? The case could clarify Congress'
authority to regulate interstate commerce -- an authority lawmakers have
relied on to enact many federal laws.

--Can people be sued for disclosing the contents of telephone calls
illegally recorded by someone else? The Pennsylvania case has particular
significance for news organizations.

--How to judge when race played too large a role in drawing an election
district. The case will mark the fourth time the justices examine North
Carolina's 12th congressional district. In 1992, the court ruled that voting
districts designed to help minorities might violate white voters' rights.

DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER
==========
CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list. Proselytizing propagandic
screeds are unwelcomed. Substance—not soap-boxing—please! These are
sordid matters and 'conspiracy theory'—with its many half-truths, mis-
directions and outright frauds—is used politically by different groups with
major and minor effects spread throughout the spectrum of time and thought.
That being said, CTRLgives no endorsement to the validity of posts, and
always suggests to readers; be wary of what you read. CTRL gives no
credence to Holocaust denial and nazi's need not apply.

Let us please be civil and as always, Caveat Lector.
