Agents Interview Gore Aide

Full FBI Criminal Investigation Opens in Debate Tape Case

ABC NEWS Oct. 2 FBI agents have interviewed a young aide who
was suspended from Al Gores Democratic presidential campaign
after claiming he knew of a mole in GOP candidate George W.
Bushs camp, ABCNEWS has learned.

Suspended Gore staffer Michael Doyne, 28, says he was
interviewed for about 30 minutes Sunday afternoon by two FBI
agents at his Nashville, Tenn., apartment. Doyne, assistant to
Gores field director, was suspended after questions were raised
about his response to inquiries from ABCNEWS about his claims
that there was a mole in the Bush campaign.

The FBI has since launched a full criminal investigation as
it seeks to find out how some of Bushs secret debate prep
material ended up in the hands of an adviser to Gore.
Republicans, including members of the Bush campaign team, have
been asking for days why the FBI investigation was going on in
Austin, Texas, home of the Bush headquarters, and not in
Nashville.

Asked About List of Names

The Doyne interview marks the first time a Gore staffer in
Nashville is known to have been interviewed by the FBI. Doyne is
still on paid leave from the campaign, but his future there
uncertain. He told ABCNEWS Jackie Judd he was a little
nervous, particularly given that he talked to the FBI without a
lawyer.

Doyne says the agents asked him if he knew anyone off a list
of seven names. The list included Yvette Lozano, who has been
named a suspect in the probe, along with five other names Doyne
says he cannot recall.

Doyne told the agents that he did not know anyone on the
list, including Lozano.

Doyne says he was also asked by the FBI agents to recount
his version of events, which he says he did.

Agents did not take fingerprints or other forensic evidence,
but he gave them a copy an e-mail in which he had asked a friend
to remain hush-hush about the mole story.

The FBI inquiry has zeroed in on Lozano, an employee of a
media consulting firm that does work for the Bush campaign.
Agents are trying to determine how a package containing Bush
campaign documents and a videotape of Bush practicing for the
upcoming presidential debates was mailed to a Gore associate

We are pleased the FBI is digging, and digging deep, Bush
campaign spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters over the weekend.
We want them to get to the bottom of it.

Threatened With Arrest

The package containing the sensitive material arrived Sept. 13 in
the Washington offices of Tom Downey, a Gore adviser. Downey
turned the material over to the FBI.

A law enforcement source told ABCNEWS this weekend that the
label on the Express Mail package received by Downey also
directly corresponds to the date and time Lozano was filmed by a
security camera mailing a package in an Austin post office.
Bushs national campaign headquarters are in Austin.

Lozano insists the package she sent did not contain the
video, but a pair of pants from The Gap that she was sending back
for her boss, Bush media adviser Mark McKinnon.

Lozano told ABCNEWS that agents have fingerprinted her for
a second time and have confiscated her office computer.

Late last week, two agents questioned her and, in an
exclusive interview with ABCNEWS, she said they warned her that
her arrest was a possibility.

Their words were, We guarantee you will not be arrested if
you tell us right now who put you up to this, Lozano said.
