The USA favorite self description for propaganda purposes is
Democracy. Conservatives are constantly reminding liberals that the USA
is a constitutional republic, not even a democratic republic preferred
by conventional labellers. But even the most conservative of spokesmen
for the USA bellow out democracy, government of the people and freedom
when bragging overseas and giving the American governed the illusion of
participation in their government. Of course even Russia called itself
democratic and nowadays in the USA the two parties only system offers
about as much choice as the one party system. And even among the
"democratic" countries the USA is probably the most limited because of
the two party system, not offering the choices of the more varied
parlimentary system, the limited range of opinion allowed in their
media, an establishment corporate media self described for deceptive
propaganda purposes as the "free press, the national security
establishment which is trying to run the world in the name of the people
of the USA and therefore must squash dissent at home with police
power, with more laws and aggressive policing, making security the growth
industry of the last 25 years.

Two points:

(1) According to the World Factbook (1994), published by the federal
government from CIA data, the description of the US government is "federal
republic, strong democratic tradition" - a tacit admission that we DO NOT
live in a democracy. Period. Whether or not any later editions list the same
description is not known to me but this in itself is proof enough.

(2) The fondling - oops, founding fathers, in general consensus, were
definitely opposed to any party system being allowed to operate in the
course of US politics. However, with all of the wrangling over federalism,
lines were drawn and soon followed political parties. I guess that means
such things are not necessary evils (as government has been described) so
much as they are habits perhaps worthy of ending.

Yes, I'm not voting for either side of the mutant. (Refer to the "Testify"
video by Rage Against The Machine.)

A republic is a representative democracy.

Hmm...let's see what the dictionary has to say. Also, note: if you ask any
civics teacher, they usually squirm a bit before admitting there is a
difference between a democratic republic and a republic. (You can look it up
yourself here: <A HREF="http://www.m-w.com/dictionary.htm">
http://www.m-w.com/dictionary.htm</A>

Main Entry: republic
Pronunciation: ri-'p&-blik
Function: noun
Etymology: French rpublique, from Middle French republique, from Latin
respublica, from res thing, wealth + publica, feminine of publicus public --
more at REAL, PUBLIC
Date: 1604
1 a (1) : a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who
in modern times is usually a president (2) : a political unit (as a nation)
having such a form of government
b (1) : a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens
entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives
responsible to them and governing according to law
(2) : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government
c : a usually specified republican government of a political unit <the
French Fourth Republic>
2 : a body of persons freely engaged in a specified activity <the republic
of letters>
3 : a constituent political and territorial unit of the former nations of
Czechoslovakia, the U.S.S.R., or Yugoslavia

Clearly, your suggested definition of "republic" is a misconception.
According to your logic, every country to wear "republic" on its mantle
makes it a democracy (ask anyone in the People's Republic of China if that's
the case). To wit, every government that is a representative democracy is a
republic and not vice versa.

In fact, the above definition does allow for people who use "republic" in a
similiar context as you do but that's like the word "irregardless". Though
logically the use of "irregardless" should mean "with regard" since there's
a double negation built into the very formation of the word; yet, it is
defined exactly the same as "regardless" because it is used in ignorance
(like the old argument over "ain't" as to mean "isn't").

Ergo, the use of "republic" as a synonym for "democracy" is erroneous. If
you use the thesaurus available above, please note that there is not a
synonym for "republic".
