-Caveat Lector- Berri urges Arabs to break ties with Israel Nicole Choueiry Daily Star staff http://www.dailystar.com.lb/03_10_00/art1.htm The spate of violence in Israel and the occupied territories prompted Speaker Nabih Berri on Monday to call on the Arab world to cut its official ties with the Jewish state and Premier Salim Hoss to urge for an Arab summit. Berri denounced Israel’s killing of several dozen Palestinians and called on Arab Parliaments and Shura Councils to condemn Israel’s acts and stress Jerusalem’s Arab identity. “I call on Arab governments to sever all diplomatic relations and forms of normalization with Israel,” Berri said in a statement on Monday. He said Israel wanted to expel Jerusalem’s Arab residents and do away with the city’s Muslim and Christian identities. “Israel’s crimes against Palestinian children, women and elderly civilians reveal once again the ugliest picture of state terrorism,” he said. For his part, Hoss said that the television footage of 12-year-old Mohammed Aldura being killed in his father’s arms must be shown to the world. The international community must condemn Israel for its crimes against innocent children, women and elderly, he said. “This is incontestable proof that Israel deliberately and intentionally killed Palestinians, and that it’s lying when it says that its soldiers were firing at armed Palestinians,” Hoss said. “Two shameful things can’t be forgiven: the shame of killing women and that of killing children. Israel is drowning in both,” he added. Hoss said the events required an Arab stand of solidarity, adding that it would be appropriate to call for an Arab summit. The president of the Higher Shiite Council, Sheikh Mohammed Mehdi Shamseddine, called on Palestinians to continue their armed struggle against Israel, saying the struggle was one of the main ways for Arabs to retain their dignity. Shamseddine appealed to all Arabs to help Palestinians protect Jerusalem and restore their legitimate rights in their country. He also urged the media to expose Israeli crimes. Hizbullah offered its services to Palestinians on Monday, saying the party was “devoted and ready to stand by its side. “We’re confident that our liberation of Lebanese territories was the first step and the best example to expel Israelis from all occupied territories to complete the plan of liberation,” a statement from the group said. “These clashes mean that the conflict with this enemy will not stop ... and indicate that the only style that will restore the stolen dignity and rights is that of the resistance and jihad,” it added. The party condemned “the international community’s suspicious silence” toward what was happening and US attempts “to treat the criminal and the victim the same way.” “We call on the international community and its organizations to stand by the rights, dignity and freedom of people in Palestine,” the statement said. Also condemning the violence were Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani, Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, the Arab Journalists’ Union, the Baath and Syrian Social Nationalist parties, and other parties and organizations.
