Subject: Editing The Alarm?
Since about 8:30am eastern time, I've been watching this
story of the explosion aboard the USS Cole in port at Aden,
Yemen. I must say that, completely apart from the manifest
tragedy of US sailors killed and wounded, it's been fascinating.
What's been most interesting only in the past ten minutes
or so is the editing of the story. Early reports included
relation by the commander of the USN 5th Fleet (whose name I
can't recall), who cited the word of an "eyewitness" that an
inflatable Zodiac boat "crashed into" the stern of the Cole,
resulting in the explosion. All morning, the deduction has been
that the Zodiac was loaded with an explosive charge aimed at
destruction or severe damaging of the Cole. Only very lately,
now, a CNN Pentagon correspondant has reported "word" that the
craft in the harbor with the Cole was assisting in some routine
port operation or other, and suffered a spontaneous explosion,
which resulted in the damage to the Cole.
Now, what's wrong with that picture?
I'm trying to imagine what sort of spontaneous accidental
explosion aboard a small harbor craft could result in a "sixty by
forty foot hole" in the hull of USS Cole, with attendant
casualties aboard as reported. On the other hand, it's a lot
less difficult to picture a shaped charge of some sort prepared
for delivery by a craft described in the early reports, to
include that of the 5th Fleet Commander.
Early on, of course, but it's very difficult for me to
dodge the sensation that the "word" of the past few minutes is
designed to damp alarm at the prospect of a focused terrorist
attack against USS Cole at Aden.
All this, of course, amid the wild story of Ramallah,
happening in real-time, concurrently. Israeli Cobras are just
shooting bloody hell out of the city streets. This is going
nowhere good, in a big-time hurry.
