MOSCOW, Oct 13, 2000 -- (Reuters) Former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin said on Thursday he would sue U.S. Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush over his accusation in a television debate that Chernomyrdin stole IMF funds. Bush attacked Vice-President Al Gore over the Democratic administration's ties with Russia in Wednesday's second presidential campaign debate. He said a part of a 1998 USD 4.8 billion IMF loan to prop up the Russian rouble had "ended up in Viktor Chernomyrdin's pockets". Chernomyrdin, who had been out of office for several months by the time the money reached Moscow, said Bush's remarks were damaging to his reputation and unworthy of a presidential candidate. "It was strange to hear such statements from a politician running for high office. Making responsible statements is a vital trait for a statesman in a democratic society," Chernomyrdin, now a member of parliament, said in a written statement. "It's a shame that Mr Bush Jr was brought up in another tradition. I think Mr Bush Jr should be getting ready for a court hearing on the issue." The International Monetary Fund has repeatedly denied that any of the money it lent to Moscow in 1998 was misappropriated by the Russians. International officials are still investigating whether some of the money was siphoned off via Swiss banks. During Wednesday's debate, Bush and Gore both advocated reforms at the IMF to ensure its funds ended up in the right hands. Bush singled out the loan to Russia in his criticism of the lending body.
