Six Phony Stock Markets Closed in Shanxi after Scamming More than USD 1.2
Million
SHANXI, China, Oct 13, 2000 -- (China Online) Imagine discovering that a
whole new stock exchange had opened just around the corner. Ridiculous? Three
hundred would-be investors in Shanxi didn't think so. And neither they nor
the police are laughing.
The Shanxi public security department and the Taiyuan Supervisory Office of
the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) have closed six separate
attempts to operate fake stock markets in the province since April.
The bogus stock markets appeared in Taiyuan, Linfen and in other cities of
Shanxi, reported the October 10 Hong Kong Ming Pao.
The accused allegedly took money from would-be investors and sold fake shares
to them, even charging commissions on the sales. Some operators also
conducted a phony "futures and options exchange," the article said.
To lure investors, some of these stock exchanges had computers displaying
what appeared to be financial data. Authorities claim, however, that the data
was counterfeitcreated and manipulated by the accused.
In fact, orders could neither be passed to legitimate stock exchanges nor be
legally registered for transfer. All funds invested by the victims were
deposited into the personal bank accounts of the alleged perpetrators,
according to the article.
The Shanxi public security department and the securities supervisory
department investigated a total of six illegal securities operations. Four
companies named in the story are: Taiyuan Huihe Financial Consultative Co.,
Taiyuan Jinxuan Co. and Gujiao Jinsheng Investment Consultative Co.
More than 300 investors claim to have been swindled out of nearly CNY 10
million (USD 1.21 million). To date, the police have recovered only a
fraction of this figure, the story said.
