Doctors call for vaccine damage compensation
By: Cormac Bourke and Ruth O' Callaghan
A COMPENSATION scheme for children damaged by vaccines has been proposed by doctors,
who are also trying to give parents a full picture of the risks associated with
vaccinations.
The Irish Medical Organisation's submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on
Health and Children which is investigating vaccination programmes says that a "no
fault" compensation system is required for the "small number of children" who suffer
adverse reactions to vaccination.

"It is important to accept that vaccines are not 100% safe," the submission says.
"However, the benefits hugely outweigh the risks. A child is far more likely to suffer
from a vaccine-preventable disease than from a vaccine."

The risk of a serious adverse reaction from the combined MMR vaccine for measles,
mumps and rubella is just one in every million children vaccinated, the submission
indicates.

A compensation scheme has been in place in Britain since 1979, though once-off
payments to families affected were increased to 100,000 in June.

Meanwhile, Dundalk doctor Mary Grehan has defended her comments on the risk associated
with the meningitis C vaccine, currently being promoted by the Department of Health.

A spokesperson for the Meningitis Research Foundation told Ireland on Sunday that
calls from worried parents to their 24-hour helpline increased dramatically because of
Dr Grehan's comments this week on Pat Kenny's radio show.

"What she said on Pat Kenny's show caused untold damage," the spokesperson said.

But Grehan says she is absolutely not against the vaccine.

"All I said was: 'Give the information to the parents,'" she told Ireland on Sunday.
She says she is worried that parents are too trusting of so-called scientific advances.

"When haemophiliacs asked the blood transfusion service about factor 8 and 9 blood, if
there were any side effects, they were told they were safe. The department's ad
campaign gives the impression that this vaccine is compulsory. Not once during the ad
does it mention possible side effects," Grehan said.

But according to the Office for Health Gain, which is co-ordinating the public
awareness campaign. "An ad is 30 seconds long, and its purpose is not to provide
detailed information,"

"The vaccine is still quite young, nobody can give a 100% guarantee. The Irish
Medicines Board, which approved the vaccine, is constantly monitoring it. If at any
stage they felt there was a reason to be concerned, they would withdraw it."
