College debate professors declared Gore the clear winner. Instant overnight polls gave Gore a strong victory. (2) In the 14 days since the first debate that "Bush lost" he's gone from about five behind to about five points ahead. How could Bush gain 10 points in 12 days if he lost the first debate? The answer lies in the non-establishment media. Today in America there are two types of media: First, that which is "above the radar" - the media outlets owned by the establishment and talked about by establishment -approved pundits. Examples: The New York Times, CBS, CNN, Newsweek, etc. Second, "below-the-radar" media - those outlets not owned by the establishment and talked about the establishment - approved pundits. Examples: Talk radio, direct mail, the Internet, cable TV, religious radio and TV. Now, for the first 24 hours after the first debate, the establishment media crowed loudly about Gore's superior knowledge and Bush's inability to defend his tax cut proposals. Three days after the debate, the establishment media could no longer ignore the direction the debate discussion was going around America's watercoolers and kitchen tables. The new and alternative media almost single-handily forced the establishment media to take a second look at their analysis of the first debate. This presidential election is the first to feel the full weight of the conservative below-the-radar media - which is where about 40% of the voters get most of their political/public policy news and information. The reason is that this is the first presidential election since 1984 in which the entire conservative movement is fully engaged in behalf of the Republican presidential candidate. For the first time in 16 years conservatives feel that they will be a full partner in a Bush White House. Governor George W. Bush has worked hard (unlike his father and Bob Dole) to make sure that the base of the Republican Party - conservatives - are on board and enthusiastic and energized about his election. If the GOP is victorious in this election, nothing will have played a more important role than the "other media." No longer are there establishment gatekeepers blocking the free flow of information to the American people. Never again will most Americans get their news through the filters of the New York Times, CBS, NBC, ABC, Time, the Washington Post, etc. To that left-wing, speak-as-one-voice establishment media we now get another worldview from Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, and a thousand other national, regional, and local talk radio shows. Add to those voices the information on hundreds of cable TV shows, Christian broadcasting, plus hundreds of daily news sites on the Internet. Combined with over a billion pieces of direct mail sent by conservatives in this election cycle (my own company sent 100,000,000). All of this says American politics will never be the same. What the liberal reformers such as Ralph Nader have been calling for, is happening in real time in front of their eyes. But unlike the liberals who receive billions of dollars each year from America's taxpayers, the conservatives use the free market to finance their below-the-radar media.
