'Rapes' all lies, says ex-MP

Accusations that he had raped a young girl when he was a country schoolteacher were
all lies, former Queensland Labor MP Bill D'Arcy told a court yesterday.

"That's a lie and an outrageous one. I've no recollection of being in the library with
her," Mr D'Arcy told the Supreme Court in Brisbane.

Mr D'Arcy also denied allegations that he had pulled the girl on to his knee, unzipped
his shorts and raped her as he sat on his desk in front of his class.

"Well, I never wore shorts, it was against regulations," Mr D'Arcy said.

"The dress code in 1963 was white shirt, slacks and a tie."

Mr D'Arcy, who was the state MP for the southern Brisbane seat of Woodridge for 22
years until his resignation last January, has pleaded not guilty to 18 child-sex
charges involving three girls and one boy between January, 1963, and July, 1965.

The three counts of rape, 11 counts of indecent dealing with girls under 12 and four
of indecent dealing with a boy under 14 relate to his time as the only teacher at the
primary school in a tiny rural town in central Queensland.

One girl, aged between seven and nine, was allegedly raped by Mr D'Arcy as he sat
teaching in front of the class.

The other complainants were allegedly molested in the library-storeroom or at his desk
in front of the class.

Mr D'Arcy, giving evidence in his defence yesterday, variously described the
allegations against him as "ridiculous" and "untrue". He told the court the young girl
he was accused of molesting from the time she was six would actually climb up of her
own accord on to his knee.

"On a few occasions she probably climbed up on my knee, or I put her on my knee," he
said.

He said it was an unusual occurrence to put a child on his knee and it only happened
perhaps once every couple of months and sometimes the younger children would expect to
be lifted up and it would all be in a "playful" context.

Mr D'Arcy denied allegations from other students that he was always putting this one
particular girl on his lap.

However, he said it was normal for a male teacher at the time to put female students
on their laps in the 1960s, and that not only teachers, but also inspectors would do
it.

Prosecutor David Bullock, cross-examining, accused Mr D'Arcy of lying and alleged he
had made this girl his sexual plaything. "You were sexually interfering with her all
the time. You were controlling her with fear and abusing her when you wanted," Mr
Bullock put to him.

"That's not true," Mr D'Arcy replied.

When Mr Bullock asked him if he found putting a hand under the girl's dress, as was
alleged, to be disgusting, Mr D'Arcy replied, "Well if you're trying to describe a
sexual act, yes."

Mr D'Arcy told the court he was well regarded in the tiny rural community as a teacher
and also because he captained the Central Queensland cricket team at the time.

He conceded that as a teacher he would have taught hundreds of children over the
years, but said he remembered if the complainants were sickly and whether they ever
went into the library or storeroom.

The trial will continue today.
