Zealots predict apocalyptic end to uprising

THREE Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops in continued
violence on the West Bank yesterday, which Christian and Jewish
fundamentalists said showed that Armageddon was approaching. Two
Palestinian men were killed in Nablus while demonstrating over
the death of a third. They were shot in what has become a deadly
ritual of the �al-Aqsa intifada�, when stone-throwing youths face
Israel�s bullets.
Another Palestinian man died after being shot by Israeli tank
machinegun fire at the Karni crossing between the Gaza Strip and
Israel. Christian groups have, since the turn of the millennium,
rallied around the Temple Mount Faithful, run by Gershon Solomon,
an Israeli Jew, and his predictions that the final battle of �Gog
and Megog against Israel� had already begun. Some of their
doom-laden prophesies have been echoed by the Israeli Right,
which has said that Israel now faces a battle for its existence.
Yassir Arafat, the Palestinian leader, yesterday added to their
paranoia by warning that the �al-Aqsa intifada� would not stop
�until a boy or a girl holds the flag of Palestine over
Jerusalem, the capital of our Palestinian State�.
In Lebanon Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah,
called on all Palestinians to launch suicide attacks to kill as
many Israelis as possible.
For the Temple Mount Faithful and its overwhelmingly Christian
followers, there is no question that the end is nigh. �All of the
prophesies of Ezekiel, Isaiah and Zechariah are coming to pass.
We can even predict that there will be a nuclear war,� Mr Solomon
said.
Most Israelis would not agree. The Left has, however, been shaken
by the Palestinian uprising and the readiness of Ehud Barak, the
Prime Minister, to offer a senior place in the administration to
Ariel Sharon and his right-wing Likud Party to save his
government from collapse when the Knesset returns from its summer
break today. Mr Barak said yesterday that the formation of a
national unity government was �close�, although Mr Sharon
continued to insist on a veto over peace efforts.
