George F. Will, WASHINGTON POST, Sunday, October 22, 2000; Page B07 IDF: VIOLENCE COULD LAST MONTHS: Violence in the territories is likely to continue for many months, and probably through next year, according to the Israel Defense Forces' most recent assessment. The general staff also believes the Lebanon front could heat up again soon. Regarding Lebanon, the opinion of the general staff is that hostile parties in Lebanon, whether Palestinians or Hizb'Allah, may soon join the fighting with the backing of either or both Syria and Iran. Israeli officials are warning citizens to brace for a new wave of violence, and they have made clear they will blame Arafat for any acts of terror. One Israeli official was quoted as telling journalists that Arafat "was not making an intelligent calculation. ... He let a devil out of the bottle, one that might never be able to be put back. This devil will blow up buses and will damage the Palestinian image in world opinion." COORDINATION OF TERROR BETWEEN HAMAS AND PLO: A Hamas spokesman in Gaza, quoted in Wednesday's WASHINGTON POST (page A01), said that representatives of Hamas and the 'Palestinian Authority' (PLO) meet daily to coordinate their activities. The paper writes that Arafat is working closely with leaders of both the Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations - leaders whose release from prison Arafat ordered at the beginning of the current violence almost a month ago. ARUTZ-7 has learned that some of the released terrorists are being hidden in PLO buildings. The ASSOCIATED PRESS similarly reported Wednesday that representatives of Hamas and other Palestinian groups have been directing the Palestinian protests. "The existence of the steering committees ... would undermine Arafat's contention that the Palestinian protests of the past month have entirely been a spontaneous outburst of anger against Israel," reported the AP. Meanwhile, clashes on Saturday included at least a dozen shooting attacks on Israeli soldiers and a homemade bomb hurled at a border police patrol. Also Saturday, the Palestine Liberation Front - the terrorist group that hijacked the Achille Lauro cruise ship and killed an American passenger in 1985 - declared Saturday that it was resuming attacks on Israel. In Lebanon, the leader of Hizb'Allah urged Palestinians to move from stone-throwing to suicide missions. Also Saturday, an Israeli was shot and his body burned near Ram'Allah, the PLO said. Israel's military said only that the body had been returned to Israeli authorities and that the matter was under investigation. But ISRAEL TV quoted Israeli police officials as saying they had "reasonable grounds" to believe the man was lynched in a political killing. FRONT-LINE TRAINING: [Editor's Note: The following is taken from the JORDAN TIMES, 25 October 2000. It is not a spoof.] "Thirteen-year-old Omar Assad throws down his school satchel, puts on his ski mask, loads up his slingshot and sets off down the rockstrewn road towards the armed Israeli soldiers - school is out and it's time for his extracurricular activities. For Omar and his schoolmates who every day after classes swell the ranks of those clashing with troops protecting a road to a Jewish settlement near this flashpoint West Bank [sic] town, the afternoon's activities have much in common with football practice. There is teamwork to be learned - who will use slingshots, who will throw stones, who will make the Molotov cocktails, who will throw them and, most important, who will be responsible for picking up the streaming teargas canisters and flinging them back at the Israelis. There are individual skills to be learned - how to select the right-sized stone, how to make an effective slingshot, how to sling the stones, how to make and dispatch Molotovs. And there are the defensive moves - dodging teargas canisters and rubber bullets, avoiding live rounds, dealing with a tear-gassing (sniffing raw onion seems the most effective), and what to do if one of your team is injured. Omar, however, is angry with his parents for not allowing him to skip classes altogether, like some of his friends do. 'For my parents it's school first, then intifada,' he said through his multicolored ski mask. Among the bravest on the 'field,' Omar managed on Monday afternoon to crawl his way up to a concrete wall within 10 meters of the Israeli soldiers, and let fly with a stone the size of a golf ball. His bull's-eye was greeted by cheers from the several hundred Palestinians who had turned up on Wednesday for the daily clash. But his friend Hamid's efforts - a strike with a Molotov cocktail which set an army vehicle alight - drew the loudest cheer of the afternoon ... Late in the afternoon, as the flames of the barricades began casting an eerie glow over the faces of the protesters in the growing gloom, Omar Assad's brother - sent by his mother - came to call him home. It was time for him to do his homework." 'HATRED FROM THE CRADLE': This film - 'Hatred from the Cradle' - depicts the Palestinian's contemptible manipulation of children's minds and the endangerment of their lives in order to achieve political gain. The major networks - CBS, ABC, and NBC - all refused to air it, despite a guarantee of payment up front. See this video at our web site. It was produced by 'One Jerusalem' and ARUTZ-7. There are also photos at 'Gamla Shall Not Fall Again' . These photos were taken by various media mainstream sources in the summer of this year (2000) at several Palestinian "summer camps". We suggest one and all to look at these pictures closely. Look at the faces on these children. Look at the seriousness, at the hate, and especially look at those training these children. Wake up and realize what Arafat is planning. They are located on the site at: <http://www.gamla.org.il/english/war/kids.htm>. ANYTHING FOR THE STORY? Hanni Luz, a reporter for the Hebrew daily HATZOFE recently gave an account of the depravity of the major media. "Bus number 160, on it's way home from Jerusalem thru the Etzion tunnels, was shot at on Wednesday evening. At the exit of the tunnel, a CNN camera crew was waiting patiently for the best shot. This incidence was not unique. The same method is being played day after day near the Jewish town of Psagot, and behind the Jewish houses in Hebron. The grotesque truth behind 'the picture tells it all' is that democratic media teams are collaborating with killers, and therefore playing an active, if not major, part in pre-planned murder. These are not press reporters. They are terror-pushers, accountable for the worst of immoral war crimes." MERETZ PUSHES TO ABANDON YESHA TOWNS: Meretz MKs Mosi Raz and Ran Cohen have called for the evacuation of eleven Jewish towns in Yesha, and are sponsoring a Knesset bill to this effect. The 'dispensable' settlements, according to the Meretz MKs, are Netzarim and Kfar Darom in Gaza, Hebron, Psagot, five central Shomron towns -Tapuach, Yitzhar, Bracha, Itamar, and Elon Moreh - and Ganim and Kadim in northern Shomron. The bill refers to these settlements as "centers of friction and violence that endanger the lives of civilians and soldiers." New General Security Service chief Avi Dichter met this week with the rabbis of Yitzhar, Bracha, Itamar, and Elon Moreh, as well as with rabbis and leaders of Hebron, Kiryat Arba, and Beit El. MEANWHILE ... IDF TO FORTIFY SETTLEMENTS: The Israel Defense Forces is planning to spend NIS 25 million ($ 6 million) on bolstering the defenses of settlements in Yesha following a decision by the Finance Ministry to grant the necessary funds. A senior military source told Ha'aretz that the Central Command decided to spend the money on "aspects of security that could serve to protect lives." The budget will, primarily, cover the costs of maintaining defensive positions near settlements. There are also plans for six more armored ambulances, in addition to those used by the IDF in the areas near Shechem, and for 10 armored vehicles, each costing approximately NIS 350,000 ($84,600). For transporting the settlers, the IDF is also asking to acquire five more armored buses, to bolster the already large fleet of 160 such buses in the territories. CYBER TERRORISM HITS ISRAEL: The current violence has spread into cyberspace, and the newest Arab target is Israel's virtual government. NetVision announced Tuesday that official government Web sites, especially those of the IDF and Foreign Ministry, have recently been attacked by hackers the company suspects are linked to "Arab terrorists." Ori Noy, director of the information division at the Foreign Ministry, said that late Monday night the ministry's site was neutralized for several hours by a flood of intentional Web traffic, most likely e-mail messages and requests. Other than being off-line for several hours the site was undamaged. The repeated assaults have slowed NetVision service, at times blocking subscribers from connecting to the Internet. On Monday, the Internet service provider's system suffered a near total crash, including its customer support department. "As a company that provides Internet service to the IDF and other government institutions, NetVision has been exposed to violence that is part of the present struggle between Israel and the Palestinians," said CEO Gilad Rabinovich. UN DISCUSSES TROOPS: Representatives of member states on the UN Security Council were scheduled to meet Thursday night in New York to "unofficially" discuss a Palestinian request for UN troops to be dispatched to Gaza, Judea and Samaria and Jerusalem to "protect" Palestinians. Government officials in Jerusalem said this is another attempt by the Palestinians to "internationalize" the conflict, and bring other elements - outside of the US - into the process. If the Security Council thwarts the Palestinian attempt to dispatch an international force, their next move may be to reconvene the Conference of High Contracting Parties of the Fourth Geneva Convention. CLINTON TRYING TO STOP UNITY GOVERNMENT: US President Bill Clinton plans to launch another peace offensive in a drive to stop Prime Minister Ehud Barak from forming a government with his right-wing opposition. Clinton has summoned Barak and Arafat for separate talks in Washington after the 7 November presidential elections. Neither has responded but both Arafat and Barak are expected to agree to meetings in the White House. US officials said Clinton has been dismayed by Barak's wooing of the opposition Likud, led by Ariel Sharon, MIDDLE EAST NEWSLINE reported. They said Clinton blames Sharon for sparking the Palestinian violence and believes that a government with the Likud leader will end the peace process. Clinton is also said to believe that a government with Sharon will push Barak to implement his plans for a military offensive against the PLO. Meanwhile, the Clinton administration on Thursday sought to distance itself from a US House of Representatives resolution condemning the Palestinian leadership for promoting violence against Israel. The resolution indirectly held Arafat responsible for the current crisis, recalling that he pledged to renounce violence in exchange for Israel's recognition of the PLO. The resolution, adopted 365-30 late Wednesday, also expressed "solidarity with the state and people of Israel". PLO FLAG FLIES OVER TEMPLE MOUNT: In light of the relatively peaceful prayers at the Temple Mount the past two weeks, the police allowed Moslems over the age of 35 to attend the services Friday. Only some 7,000 people arrived, waving PLO and Hamas flags; a Palestinian flag was unfurled over the Dome of the Rock on the Mount, as it was last week during the prayers. ANTI-SEMITIC VIOLENCE INCREASES: The Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem said Sunday that hatred against Jews was spreading worldwide as a result of a recent wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Yad Vashem chairman Avner Shalev said anti-Semitic attacks had risen sharply in the past 25 days since the violence began. "We are not talking about local isolated incidents," he said. "There is a widespread outbreak and it is very worrying." President Moshe Katsav expressed his concern over such events. Katsav sent letters to France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and Uzbekistan.
