The Israeli government has failed to act, fearing the sensitive issue could trigger a new eruption of violence, sources said. The Temple Mount site, known to Muslims as al-Haram-al Sharif, is a fiercely contested shrine claimed by both Jews and Arabs. The 35-acre compound includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock venerated by Muslims and the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site. Arab workers digging for months to enlarge the underground mosque have been turning up artifacts from the first and second Jewish temples and routinely discarding them, say Israeli archaeologists. "The goal of this desecration and destruction of historic structures and artifacts is to eradicate any evidence of the existence of the Jewish temples," Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice president of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations told The Post. Hoenlein said he was in Jerusalem last week and spoke with Israeli archaeologists who showed him evidence of what is happening. The digging is "part of a campaign to destroy and deny Jewish roots to the Temple Mount and instead to build [Palestinian leader] Yasser Arafat's myth that the only religious connection to Temple Mount derives from the Muslim belief that Mohammed went from there up to heaven on his horse," Hoenlein said. Jews venerate the site because it's where King Solomon built a temple that was destroyed in 586 BC and rebuilt by King Herod. The second temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. -and only the Western Wall remains. The issue of who will control the Temple Mount, which Arafat says should be under full Arab sovereignty, has been one of the most burning issues in the peace talks since the Camp David summit. Shalom Goldstein, adviser on Arab Affairs to Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert, told The Post the Arabs were "deceptive" about their plans for the mosque, which was built four years ago.
