Our Drill sergeants should be an elite group that practices the art of making soldiers. This report indicates that even with this training elite, double standards are being applied. *********************************************************** By a concerned Artilleryman At Ft. Sill there are female Drill Sergeants (majority of them, not all) who for some reason or another can't do Drill Sgt’s duty. At Ft.Sill we have 5 training battalions and one reception battalion. Case in point; a female Drill Sgt came to a training battery and could never make it to work on time. Her excuse was the hours were too demanding. To help this Drill out, the Brigade Command Sergeant Major decided to send her to the reception battalion where the hours and stress were less. If this had been a male Infantry Drill Sgt, he would probably be relieved and his career would be over. In another case, two female Drill Sgts got into an altercation (turned out to be physical) in front of recruits. Instead of relieving them, they were transferred. One went to the reception battalion and made the promotion list the following year. Our leaders (Command Sergeants Major) are protecting weak Drill Sgts who can't do the job, when they should be sent back to their units without their Drill Sgt badge and the recognition that accompanies it. I have done my time as a Drill Sgt, and continue my mission to train soldiers. You are right -- we are in some real trouble if we get into a big firefight. Something our future President shouldn’t ignore. *********************************************************** Press Release National Border Patrol Council Local 1613 of The American Federation Of Government Employees Affiliated With AFL-CIO -- Protecting Those Who Protect Our Borders FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [San Diego, CA] Shortly after noon on October 24, 2000, two U.S. Border Patrol agents patrolling the international border between the United States and Mexico were shot at by ten men dressed in military-style uniforms with tactical vests and carrying high-powered military rifles with bayonets. The incident occurred in Copper Canyon, about eight miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Almost immediately after the agents disembarked from a clearly marked Border Patrol helicopter, the soldiers fired approximately eight shots at them from Mexico. The agents took cover in thick brush and identified themselves in Spanish as Border Patrol agents, but were nonetheless pursued by some of the soldiers, who entered the United States by crossing a well-maintained barbed-wire fence. The other Mexican soldiers set up two sniper positions, one in Mexico and the other in the United States. The soldiers searched the area, pointing their weapons in the direction of the Border Patrol agents and ordering them in Spanish to come out of the brush. The agents did not comply, but instead identified them selves again and told the soldiers to return to Mexico. Once other Border Patrol agents neared the scene, the soldiers retreated to Mexico and drove off in a minivan. This is the second confirmed incident this year in which Border Patrol agents have been shot at by the Mexican military. The other occurred on March 14 in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. As in the previous incident, disaster in this case was averted only through the exemplary professionalism, courage and restraint of the involved Border Patrol agents. Local 1613 of the National Border Patrol Council, which represents over 2,100 Border Patrol employees in the San Diego area, is seeking immediate action by the governments of both nations to ensure that incursions and acts of aggression by the Mexican military cease and desist before a tragedy occurs. The history of the tune that fills most of us with great emotion - TAPS. I admit that I never knew all three verses. ********************************************* "Nancy L. Ross" wrote: We have all heard the haunting melody of "Taps." It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes. But do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be pleased to find out about its humble beginnings. Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing, Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who was severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward the encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission to give his son a full military burial despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted. The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was denied since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him one musician. The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted.
