GI HUMOR - The Ballad of the Black Berets
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ed.: Many of you have already seen this…tell the true perception. At least we
can get a laugh out of it.
**************************************************
Fighting Finance at their desk
They'll pay some...and screw the rest
For the grunts there'll be no pay
"Cause now THEY wear a black beret
Shield of shame upon their collar
The AG Corps will whoop and holler
Because they join the elite today
As they don their black beret
Up their ass with bugs and gas
Chemical Corps is lightning fast
They'll poison troops in great new ways
'Cause now they have their black berets
Medical Corps...reduced to tears
No more hair below their ears
Haircuts they must get today
So they can wear a black beret
Transportation--truck and troops
In motor pools, in little groups
No cargo moves at all today
'Cause they can't drive with that black beret
Spooks and Redlegs...they're a gas
Shooting targets really fast
Their aim's improved a bunch today
'Cause now they've got their black berets
Tanks and Bradleys in a row
Roaring Treadheads, set to go
Republican Guard a match--no way
'Cause now they wear the black beret
Air defenders shoot 'em down
Patriots fly...wreckage on the ground
They're first to fire, 'specially today
‘Cause now they, too, have a black beret
The QM Corps supplies us all
Our stuff's delayed...but they have a ball
With crates of new hats on the way
Now they're the elite with black berets
MacArthur, Brad, and Shy Meyer, too
Readiness problems, they're nothing new
To raise morale, THEY found a way
Didn't involve NO black beret
Back at Benning, a young wife waits
Her Ordinance Trooper has met his fate
Black Beret he's wearing ...NOT
Met some Rangers in a Parking Lot.
Campbell, Bragg, and Lewis too
Soldiers are PISSED...you know it's true
After a five miles run in PT today
They'll probably burn THEIR damn berets.
ARTICLE 15 - MEDAL OF HONOR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ed.: Pacific 1945. We have all followed the news concerning the brave sailors
aboard the USS Cole and their efforts to save their ship. The USS Cole is
finally making its way back to the shores of America. The sailors aboard the
USS Cole lived up to the ship’s namesake, Marine Corps SGT. Darrell Samuel
Cole. Initially a bugler, he carried in him the warrior’s heart, which made
him stand the ground in mortal combat. If you know of any MOH recipient who
is hospitalized or has passed recently, please write James H. Also, if you
would like more info on MOH recipients and their stories, please email James
H at [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

*COLE, DARRELL SAMUEL

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Born: 20 July
1920, Flat River, Mo. Entered service at. Esther, Mo. other Navy award:
Bronze Star Medal.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life
above and beyond the call of duty while serving as leader of a Machinegun
Section of Company B, 1st Battalion, 23d Marines, 4th Marine Division, in
action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima in the
Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945.

Assailed by a tremendous volume of small-arms, mortar and artillery fire as
he advanced with 1 squad of his section in the initial assault wave, Sgt.
Cole boldly led his men up the sloping beach toward Airfield No. 1 despite
the blanketing curtain of flying shrapnel and, personally destroying with
hand grenades 2 hostile emplacements which menaced the progress of his unit,
continued to move forward until a merciless barrage of fire emanating from 3
Japanese pillboxes halted the advance. Instantly placing his 1 remaining
machinegun in action, he delivered a shattering fusillade and succeeded in
silencing the nearest and most threatening emplacement before his weapon
jammed and the enemy, reopening fire with knee mortars and grenades, pinned
down his unit for the second time.

Shrewdly gauging the tactical situation and evolving a daring plan of
counterattack, Sgt. Cole, armed solely with a pistol and 1 grenade, coolly
advanced alone to the hostile pillboxes. Hurling his 1 grenade at the enemy
in sudden, swift attack, he quickly withdrew, returned to his own lines for
additional grenades and again advanced, attacked, and withdrew.

With enemy guns still active, he ran the gauntlet of slashing fire a third
time to complete the total destruction of the Japanese strong point and the
annihilation of the defending garrison in this final assault. Although
instantly killed by an enemy grenade as he returned to his squad, Sgt. Cole
had eliminated a formidable Japanese position, thereby enabling his company
to storm the remaining fortifications, continue the advance, and seize the
objective.

By his dauntless initiative, unfaltering courage, and indomitable
determination during a critical period of action, Sgt. Cole served as an
inspiration to his comrades, and his stouthearted leadership in the face of
almost certain death sustained and enhanced the highest tradition of the U.S.
Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
