WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT: It has been said that the people of this country
eventually get exactly what they want. In this election just passed the
people have spoken, and have shown exactly what they want -- Totalitarianism.
Hate. Division. Forget the good of the country, forget our heritage from the
past or our obligations to future generations.

"Oh, come on now", come the guffaws of laughter from the ever-so-thoughtful,
considerate, and tolerant left, "All we want is to provide for those less
fortunate, make sure that the wrong people don't get too much wealth or
power, and help save the world by enacting just a few reasonable restrictions
on the behavior of people and corporations."

Exactly.

Despite the evidence before our eyes of the tyranny, poverty, and misery
caused by seven decades of socialism and forced collectivism in the Soviet
Union, and five decades of socialism and forced collectivism in Eastern
Europe, we have decided to ignore those lessons and implement our own
versions of socialism and forced collectivism. Our versions will turn out
much better, you see, because ours will be tyranny with a smiley face,
because under our versions of socialism and forced collectivism the "right
people" will be in charge.

Despite the evidence before our eyes of the tyranny and death resulting from
the 12 years of Nazism, we have decided to ignore that lesson and
countenance, even encourage, the division of our population into warring
factions, in which selected unpopular people and unpopular groups are singled
out by opportunistic politicians for demonization and vilification. Like
those religious wackos, those gun nuts, those cigarette smokers, those evil
rich people, those extremist pro-lifers, like those -- gasp -- strict
constructionists who actually think that the Constitution really means
exactly what it says. After all, it's not the ever-so-tolerant left who are
being vilified and demonized, it's all those others -- and doesn't the
ever-so-tolerant left think that our society would be better off without
those people, anyway?

We still don't know who will ultimately be declared the winner of Tuesday's
election. We won't know for at least another week (much longer if the courts
get involved), as Florida does recount after recount (now doing a third
recount by hand, a process that the Bush campaign has filed a lawsuit to
enjoin because of the potential for manipulation); and as the Gore campaign
has found a Florida Judge (reported by FOX News to be a Gore sympathizer and
known liberal activist in Florida) to enjoin Florida from certifying the
recount results until a hearing is held on allegations of vote fraud. Jesse
Jackson alleges that blacks were intimidated (which means that Janet Reno is
getting into the fray); while local representatives of Miami's Haitian
community allege that Haitians were intimidated by democrat poll workers and
instructed to vote for Gore. As this drags out, other states with close votes
are starting to re-examine their own ballots, and other recounts may be
triggered. On Friday, New Mexico was taken out of the Gore win column because
of its own close results, and a recount there is likely. The State of Oregon,
three days after the election, finally certified the results of their
ballots, which are all mail-in (so as not to have any of the messy incidents
of self-government, like standing in line at a polling place, intrude on the
tender sensibilities of Oregon voters) in favor of Gore.
But no matter what ultimately happens, no matter who is ultimately declared
President, Gore probably would have won by a large margin, if he didn't have
the albatross of Clinton's scandals hanging around his neck, if he didn't
have his own Buddhist fundraising, questionable deals with the Russians,
involvement in questionable domestic programs, and "no controlling legal
authority" problems. Bush ran a campaign based on character, unity,
bipartisan governance, and a restoration of honor and dignity to the
Presidency, but those attributes were of little interest to at least half of
the voters. Gore received his votes by running a campaign of lies,
divisiveness, race-baiting, and demagoguery. He received his votes relying on
a campaign of pandering promises of payoffs with taxpayer money to everyone
in sight, for endless new federal programs. Even if Gore loses, the voting
public has sent a very clear message to politicians of the future -- despite
what people say about cooperation and bipartisanship, the politics of
division and pandering is what they will vote for. Gore has proved that
divisiveness, demagoguery, and fear-mongering works. No matter what the
outcome, Al Gore already has his legacy. And he is cementing the Clinton
legacy as well; because never forget that it was Bill Clinton who pioneered
the politics of personal destruction, the politics of division; and it was
Hillary Clinton who won overwhelmingly despite her dark musings about some
vast right-wing conspiracy.

So all those people who voted for Al Gore demonstrate, clap, and dance in the
streets with glee, in the hopes that finally, someone in Washington is going
to take care of them, someone in Washington is going to relieve them of some
of the terrible burdens and stresses of modern life -- burdens like 50
channel DSL or 250 channel satellite service, two-wheel drive or all-wheel
drive in their new fuel efficient Algoremobile, Seinfeld reruns or Friends
reruns. Terribly stressful burdens like that. But there will still be some
stresses in modern life, unfortunately for the helpless and much victimized
residents of the "United" States. Not happy paying $4 a gallon for gasoline
for your new Algoremobile? Don't complain about it, the guy that you voted
for to be President is happy to see $4 a gallon gasoline. He'd be even
happier to see $5 or $6 a gallon gasoline, because he really doesn't think
that you should own a car at all, and you voted for him. You really should be
taking the bus, don't you know. No bus going where you need to go? Well, you
have feet, don't you? So you can walk where you need to go. Or ride your
bicycle. See? You still have choices in life.

And while you're riding that bus, you will have plenty of time to think.
Perhaps you'll be able to think of an explanation for your children, about
why the wealth that comes from hard work and success in life is so evil,
which is why you voted for a guy who will do everything in his power to see
to it that your children are not successful in life; why you voted for a guy
who, if your children do become successful despite his best efforts to
prevent such a calamity, will do everything in his power to take away what
they have achieved. Perhaps you'll be able to think of an explanation for
your children as to why eighty percent of their earnings will be taken away
by the government, to pay for the retirement security and the prescription
medications of Ross Perot and Bill Gates and Barbra Streisand.

The successful divisiveness of the Gore campaign is already coming home to
roost in the Senate, where democrat Tom Daschle, grinning from ear to ear,
has threatened to obstruct any legislative activity in the Senate unless the
democrats get a "power sharing" arrangement -- equal voice in committee
chairmanships despite being the minority party. Just like those European
parliaments that share power between elected leaders and the defeated yet
intransigent socialists who routinely threaten to take to the streets in mob
violence unless they are given power that they did not earn. Jesse Jackson is
already in the streets (peacefully, as is his Constitutional right --
ironically relying on the same Constitution that he has such little respect
for in other areas) demanding that thousands of ballots that were
disqualified because they were marked illegally be awarded to Gore. In
response to Jackson's demand that voting be dumbed down even further, like
everything else in this country has been dumbed down to placate the ignorant,
one Florida election official remarked that if we want simple elections, all
we have to do is travel 90 miles south to Cuba, where elections are very
simple -- they don't have any. In response to that comment, it is being
reported that Fidel Castro has offered to send monitors to help oversee our
ballot recounts. Other Gore partisans are demanding that the Constitutionally
established Electoral College be abandoned and that Gore be awarded the
presidency -- on the basis of judges in democrat lawsuits using statistical
analysis to determine what the voters probably intended (if that were
legitimate, we could simply do away with elections altogether). Newly minted
Senator Hillary has announced her support for legislation to amend the
Constitution to eliminate the Electoral College, and some commentators see
that as a not so subtle announcement of her own presidential candidacy in
2004 (assuming Gore loses this election), because without the Electoral
College all she would have to do is win population-heavy liberal east and
west coasts, and several high population cities around the country, and she
could simply ignore the vast rest of the country. At least eight lawsuits
have already been filed by democrat partisans to overturn the election
results in Florida. Gore spokesman Daley has implied that Florida's multiple
recounts are just the beginning, not the end, and has demanded that the
election be awarded to Gore because of the popular vote elsewhere in the
country, and forget the Electoral College. In direct response to Daley's
statement, the stock market immediately tanked at the prospect of a long
period of uncertainty. So once again in the tenure of this Clinton-Gore
administration, the nation is supposed to ignore the law, ignore the
Constitution, ignore the good of the country, and simply give them what they
want. We are to destroy what little is left of our Constitutional republic in
order to satisfy their demands.

An American immigrant who grew up under communist tyranny in Hungary -- and
is thus well able to recognize the socialist enemy when he sees it -- wrote
about the conduct of Gore's partisans in the fight over the results of this
election, "The true measure of the looming crisis is the inescapable reality
that our political life has become increasingly populated with people who
appear unfamiliar with the concept of honor. Such people place the highest
premium on acquiring power and will do what it takes to prevail. They are all
around us now, and their shrill voices are growing bolder by the hour. Some,
like Mr. Gore, still pay lip service to the Constitution, but most are
blatantly advocating throwing it away if it serves their purpose. Their
incessant references to 'our Democracy' is code for getting rid of the
Constitution. . In the meantime, playing by the rules, as the Bush campaign
is bending over backwards to do, may well cause the election to be stolen,
unless the outrages of the other side are clearly identified as such. . It is
frightening to watch the spokesmen for the Gore campaign --- all, all
honorable men -- preparing the ground for their assault on our constitutional
system. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, another honorable man, has already arrived on
the scene and, as usual, is demanding money to organize yet another protest.
Others talk about the need to resolve the situation 'in a fair manner.' As we
know, in the vocabulary Democrats have inherited from the socialists, 'fair'
replaces 'lawful.' There is clear and present danger unless true honor
returns to the political process on both sides of the aisle."

However the final count comes out, the fact remains that the voting public,
responding like sheep to democrat demagoguery, has sent a clear message to
future politicians -- that there is no such thing as "the American people"
any more; there is only a large land mass containing nothing but squabbling,
hating, fighting, pressure groups and special interests. Demanding, whining,
selfish. And if Al Gore ultimately wins this election, having done so on the
basis of such a divisive campaign, is there any question about how he will
govern?

Bill Clinton wants a legacy? He has one.

The "United" States of America? That "United" part is now nothing more than a
bad joke.
