Jean Hill, an eyewitness to President John F. Kennedy's assassination, died
Tuesday in Dallas.
The retired teacher, 69, died at Parkland hospital of complications from a
blood disease. Private services will be Thursday.
"The Lady in Red," as she has become known, can be seen with friend Mary
Moorman in a frame of the famous Zapruder film, which captured the
assassination on Nov. 22, 1963.
The two friends were standing off the south curb of Elm Street about 15 feet
from the Lincoln Continental the president was traveling in when the fatal
shot hit him.
"She was the woman in the red raincoat next to the car, and it was her best
friend that took the picture that ran in the AP and around the world," said
her son, Billy Hill, who lives in both Dallas and Cincinnati.
In a police affidavit, Ms. Hill said she had heard "two shots" and, after a
pause, "three or four more."
Her son said she is the first to refer to the area where she said she heard
shots as "the grassy knoll."
Ms. Hill repeated her account to the Warren Commission in 1964, then stayed
out of the public eye for about 25 years. When she reappeared, she added
details she had earlier denied, such as seeing a rifle and a gunman.
Assassination researchers have considered her a controversial witness
because of her changing story, according to Gary Mack, curator of the Sixth
Floor Museum on Dealey Plaza.
"It is absolutely true that Jean Hill believed that those shots came from
what is now called the grassy knoll," Mr. Mack said.
In 1991, Ms. Hill worked as a consultant for Oliver Stone's film JFK. Over
the last several years, she had been speaking to groups about her 1963
experience.
She also co-wrote JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness with Bill Sloan of
Dallas. Mr. Stone wrote the forward.
Although Nov. 22, 1963, may appear to be the defining date in her life, Mr.
Hill said his mother's role was as a dedicated teacher. She was born and
raised in Oklahoma and earned a degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in
Shawnee, he said.
Ms. Hill taught in the Dallas public schools for more than 20 years,
retiring from H.S. Thompson Learning Center.
"Her whole life was spent getting school supplies for kids that didn't have
school supplies," her son said. "The most unusual thing about her was that
up until the day she died, she was always cooking and giving people things."
In addition to her son, Ms. Hill is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Poorman
of Wilmett, Ill.; her mother, Irene Turner of Fort Worth; two sisters, Wanda
Jacobs of Fort Worth and Ramona Boback of Hagerstown, Md.; and six
grandchildren.
