-Caveat Lector- http://www.cchr.org/rape/tds.htm The Delilah Syndrome How Psychiatrists Get Away With It [Excerpt] >snip< Today, there is a psychiatric diagnosis for all that ails us--and much more. Underpinning psychiatry's ability to convince governments to fund them is an entire foundation of fraudulent "diagnostic" criteria. It has been going on for decades and by now it has attained ludicrous heights. People with normal, everyday problems in life are diagnosed by psychiatrists as having a "mental illness": the migraine sufferer has a "pain disorder;" the child who fidgets or is over-zealous at play is "hyperactive;" the person who gives up smoking or drinking coffee has a "nicotine disorder" or suffers "caffeine intoxication," the woman who is agitated or anxious is suffering from "premenstrual syndrome" (PMS). If you stutter, it's a "mental illness." If you have a low math score, it's "developmental arithmetic disorder." If you have problems composing expressive written text or have poor paragraph organization, this is not, by psychiatric standards, a problem your teacher should correct but "developmental expressive writing disorder." Of course this is a problem that should be addressed by psychiatry. Do you recall driving your mother to despair when you preferred, as a toddler, to eat non-nutritious food? According to psychiatry's "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual" (DSM-IV) you probably had a "feeding disorder." As a teenager, did you argue with your parents? If you did, this wasn't growing pains or trying to assert your independence, but "oppositional defiance disorder." If your grandmother can't remember where her shoes are and whether she paid the electricity bill that month, these are definite psychiatric grounds to cart her off to a nursing home or psychiatric hospital. She is obviously suffering from dementia. The game is simple. It is no more than an attempt to drum up business. And the danger is that when "normal" people get diagnosed as mentally ill and normal behavior is redefined, anyone can be affected--your mother, daughter, son or neighbor. What makes this a very dangerous game is that what usually follows such diagnoses is psychiatric "treatment." And this can be lethal. If there ever was a modern example of the maxim, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely," it undoubtedly would be psychiatry. Consider that the psychiatrist has maneuvered himself into the position of being the sole judge of what constitutes "mental illness" in our society. Only he is qualified, he will claim, to arbitrate this. And according to psychiatry's own text books, this means that every form of normal behavior from birth to grave can get diagnosed as "madness" according to the whim of the practitioner. How Are You In Danger? Lest you think you are not in direct danger, consider that among the many maladies psychiatrists have "discovered" is "chronic manic depression in full remission." What does this mean? It means someone may appear completely normal, but that they are still "sick" and their "illness," while in "full remission", could return at "any time." When you consider that even "happiness" has been determined to be a "major affective disorder-pleasant type" by psychiatrists, it gives you an idea of how easy it is to be diagnosed as a "manic depressive." You would only have to appear happy one day and then, stricken by some family loss, sad the next, and your "full remission" status would disappear. 10 This could be enough to have you taken from your home and held against your will in an institution as part of the "involuntary commitment" laws. To any clear-thinking individual, this is preposterous and unacceptable. Yet the government, which is supposed to protect its citizens, turns a blind eye to this violation of civil liberties. Inventing "Mental Disorders" The following are symptoms and maladies described in DSM-IV that psychiatrists use to label people as mentally ill and in need of treatment: Oppositional defiance disorder: teenagers who are independent and argue with parents. Developmental expressive writing disorder: problems expressing oneself in writing. Pain disorder: one who suffers from headaches. Conduct disorder: being truant from school. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: child who doesn't listen when spoken to, runs and climbs "excessively" or has difficulty awaiting turn. Caffeine intoxication: irritability after 2-3 cups of coffee. 1996-2000 Citizens Commission on Human Rights. All Rights Reserved.
