Vice President Al Gore has become only the second presidential candidate
in U.S. history to win more than 50 million votes -- and the first to
reach that mark as a non-incumbent president.

Gore's swelling national numbers also give him about a 300,000-vote
popular-vote margin over Texas Gov. George W. Bush, according to
unofficial tallies.

Still, Gore appears likely to be the first popular-vote winner to be
denied the White House since 1888. If Bush can hold onto a narrow lead in
Florida and claim those 25 electoral votes, the Texas governor will become
the first popular-vote loser to claim the presidency in modern U.S.
history.
