Clinton Pays Respects to Widow of Charles Ruff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton paid his respects on
Monday to the widow of former White House Counsel Charles Ruff,
who died on Sunday and who had defended Clinton during his
impeachment proceedings and secured his acquittal by the Senate
in February 1999. Ruff died of an apparent heart attack while at
his home, Clinton aides said.
Clinton visited Ruff's home and spoke with his widow, Sue. With
him were current White House counsel Beth Nolan, deputy counsel
Bruce Lindsey and White House Chief of Staff John Podesta. Former
deputy counsel Cheryl Mills went as well.
As evidence of the emotional impact of Ruff's death, Clinton
walked back into the White House after visiting the Ruff home
with his arm draped over the shoulders of Nolan.
Clinton was informed of Ruff's death as he departed Elmendorf Air
Force Base in Alaska on his way home to Washington after a
lengthy trip to Asia, White House spokesman Jake Siewert told
reporters traveling with the president.
Ruff, who left his White House post in the summer of 1999, was
Clinton's fifth White House counsel in four years.
"Hillary and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of
Charles F.C. Ruff who served as my White House counsel from 1997
to 1999," the president said in a statement released by the White
House.
"All of us at the White House admired Chuck for the power of his
advocacy, the wisdom of his judgement and the strength of his
leadership," the president said.
"We loved him for his generous spirit and his keen wit, which he
used to find humor in even the most challenging circumstances,"
he said.
Lindsey told Reuters early on Monday after the president's return
from Asia that Ruff's death "is just tragic."
Crediting Ruff with being a major force behind Clinton's
acquittal in his impeachment trial in February 1999, Lindsey
said: "He was calm when everybody else was crazy. For the time
and for what he did, I'm not sure there was another person in the
world who pulled together the team. He kept us focused."
"I've never seen a man who was as strong as he was. We all drew
comfort from his strength," Lindsey said.
He added that Ruff had been assisting Vice President Al Gore's
legal team during the recount proceedings in Florida where Gore
and Republican George W. Bush are battling for the electoral
votes in that state that will decide the unresolved presidential
election.
"Chuck Ruff's historic contributions to our nation span decades
and will serve as a source of inspiration for scholars and
citizens for generations to come," Gore said in a statement.
