STAFF WRITER Page number 23 The strange figure with an antenna coming out of its head drawn by the man accused of being the Riverhead sniper is one sign that he is a paranoid schizophrenic, according to the testimony of a defense psychologist yesterday. Dr. Jamie Greene of Mount Kisco, N.Y., testified in county court yesterday that the series of psychological tests she gave Yusef Rahman demonstrate that Rahman was so enmeshed in his paranoid schizophrenic delusions when he went on a shooting spree in Riverhead in the winter of 1988 that he could not appreciate that what he did was wrong. Earlier this week, Rahman testified that he went on military combat missions accompanied by companions Radio Man, Boobie and others to free hostages being held in camps. After his arrest, he said his companions came to the county jail by helicopter to visit him and told him that his medals for his missions were waiting for him in their camp but that they could not help him in his current predicament. Rahman has pleaded not guilty to one count of second-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of reckless endangerment on the grounds that he is not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect. Under New York law, a mentally ill person is not responsible if he cannot appreciate the consequences of his actions or appreciate that they are wrong. When Greene asked Rahman to draw a picture of a person, he drew a man with an antenna coming out of his head, showed the muscles inside the man's stomach and delineated the figure's knees and ankle bones, she said. A doodle shows a bullet pointed at the left foot, she added. His delusions about being a soldier and being involved with military things were "so pervasive that he can't get away from it, even in his doodles," Greene added. That antenna "can only be interpreted as an antenna, an extremely paranoid feature," Greene said. The antenna, she explained, is a mechanism for receiving special messages, a means of "additional communication to the outside world that we all don't normally have." Greene said she'd never seen any one add knees and ankle bones to such a drawing, and showing the inside muscles was a sign of Rahman's seeing both the inside and outside of something simultaneously. Seeing two different things as the same thing is a schizophrenic trait, she said. Even Rahman's answers on an IQ test showed how thoroughly he lived in his delusionary military world, Greene added. In the verbal part of the test, Rahman was asked to define words like commence and he answered "to commence firing." He said the first ink blot she showed him when she gave him a Rorschach test was an F-16, she added. ------------ MARtin F.
