'MAYOR BILL' ITEM SIMPLY HIZZ-TERICAL

A highly amused Mayor Giuliani fielded questions yesterday about
the idea of President Clinton succeeding him in City Hall.
"I'm still trying to get over all the unreal things that have
happened this year," Giuliani chuckled.
The Post's Neal Travis reported yesterday that Beltway insiders
believe Gracie Mansion is where the president would land after a
year of writing and lecturing.
"It was just a gossip-column item, so I won't take it seriously,"
Giuliani said.
The mayor said his success in office came, in part, from being
born in the Big Apple, and that he understood "in a special way
what was wrong with the city."
Hizzoner conceded that not all voters share his view of
born-and-bred New Yorkers being best suited for public office.
"My preference . . . is sometimes counted out by the electorate,"
he conceded, perhaps alluding to Sen.-elect Hillary Rodham
Clinton.
When asked about the possibility of President Clinton making a
run for City Hall, White House spokesman Jake Siewart responded,
"He's already had the second-toughest job in American politics,
so why would he want the first?"
