BOSTON CABBY LINKED TO COLE TERROR BLAST

A former Boston-area cabby probably used his passport to circle
the globe, helping terror master Osama bin Laden set up attacks
on U.S. targets - including the USS Cole blast, officials said
last night.
Raed Khalil Mohammed Hejazi, a California native with Palestinian
roots who lived in Everett, Mass., until late last year, was
extradited from Syria to Jordan last week.
There, Hejazi has been sentenced to death for plotting attacks on
tourist spots during millennium celebrations.
U.S. investigators believe Hejazi is a key player in bin Laden's
global terror network - and that he may have helped plan the
deadly Oct. 12 Cole bombing in Yemen.
Officials suspect Hejazi's U.S. passport gave him freedom to
travel throughout the Mideast and Africa to plan the attacks.
"He's a key part of the infrastructure, a conduit who helped put
people and plots together," a U.S. counterterrorism official
told The Post. "The American passport gave him a lot of freedom
of movement that others in bin Laden's organization do not
possess."
Hejazi, who lists his age as 21 but is believed to be at least 10
years older, was among 18 men convicted in September of plotting
New Year's Eve attacks on Amman's Radisson Hotel and at several
religious sites in Jordan.
The original Jordanian indictment specifically accused Hejazi of
purchasing bomb-making materials and weapons to be used in the
attacks - and storing them on his brother's farm outside Amman.
The attacks in Jordan were supposed to coincide with a New Year's
terror bombing at Seattle's Space Needle and an attack on an
American warship in Aden on a day of bloodshed believed to have
been masterminded by bin Laden.
The Seattle attack was foiled when Algerian-born Ahmed Ressam was
arrested with a carload of explosives as he tried to cross the
Canadian border into Port Angeles, Wash.
The attack on the USS Sullivan in Aden harbor failed when a boat
overloaded with explosives sank.
But the same operatives spent nine months building a new
boat-bomb that was used in the Cole attack, investigators have
been told.
