MEDIA WATCH: PLANNING HELL FOR W.
Friday,December 8,2000
New York Post
WON'T someone tell Geraldo Rivera and Alan Dershowitz to get a
life?
Most lawyers have a pretty good idea when a case is lost. Not
Dershowitz. In one of his regular gigs on Rivera's CNBC gabfest
Tuesday night, the Harvard Law prof called on all Americans to
make George W. Bush's presidency a living hell.
"I think it's really important that when and if a concession
comes from Gore that we not have a honeymoon, that we not put
this behind us, that this be the beginning of at least a many,
many month investigation into the circumstances that led to this
presidency," Dershowitz intoned.
Did Geraldo even suggest that Dershowitz's verbal jihad
contradicted his insistence that the lengthy impeachment
proceedings against Bill Clinton damaged the presidency and the
country?
As if. "Oh, I agree," chimed in an obviously enthusiastic
Rivera. The real question, asks the Media Research Center's
Brent Baker: How many others in the media agree?
*
ONE network journalist who apparently isn't even waiting for a
Gore concession before making W.'s life miserable is CBS' Scott
Pelley. His interview with Bush on Tuesday's "60 Minutes II" was
not only aggresively confrontational, but downright bizarre, as
well.
Perhaps the most surreal moment came when Pelley asked Bush if
he's "giving any thought to making your brother attorney general"
- you know, he added helpfully, "John Kennedy did it for Bobby
Kennedy."
Does Pelley really think W. is that ignorant of history?
Actually, Pelley's own ignorance came out. The governor replied
that no, his brother Jeb isn't on the list for attorney general -
for a very simple reason: "He didn't go to law school." (Not to
mention the federal anti-nepotism law passed precisely because of
RFK's appointment.)
So, having failed to uncover what he must have suspected was a
secret plot to reward Younger Brother for manipulating the
electoral process, Pelley then tried to paint George W. is an
ingrate.
"You're not sore about Florida, are you?" demanded the CBS
newsman.
Of course not, replied Bush - who then showed a real sense of
humor despite the in-your-face questioning: "I appreciate your
asking. [Jeb]'ll be happy to hear his name mentioned on national
TV."
