Tortorici told authorities that a government-implanted penile microchip was leading him to pedophilia, according to testimony Tuesday. Tortorici told psychiatric officials, two years before overtaking a University at Albany class and shooting a student, that he had kissed and held a 7-year-old girl and was obtaining instructions, via a microchip maliciously lodged in his penis, on how to have sexual intercourse with a child. Evidence has shown that Tortorici underwent several operations on his penis to correct a structural abnormality. It has also shown that Tortorici fretted for some eight years about a microchip that he believed the government had implanted during one of the operations. During the past week, Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Preiser has attempted to prove that Tortorici overtook a UAlbany class on Dec. 14, 1994, shot the student who tried to subdue the gunman after a two-hour standoff and tried to kill three police hostage negotiators. Assistant Public Defender Peter Lynch on Tuesday opened his case, which focuses not on what Tortorici did, but why he did it. Lynch said Tortorici was reaching out for help when he orchestrated the UAlbany siege, a claim borne out by Tuesday's testimony. In 1992, two years before the UAlbany incident, Tortorici approached doctors at the Capital District Psychiatric Center and suggested he would do something ``drastic'' unless someone seriously considered his microchip claims, records show. Regardless of Tortorici's delusions, Assistant District Attorney Cheryl F. Coleman contends the defendant should be held criminally responsible for his actions. ------------ [note : Ralph Tortorici died in his prison cell on August 10, 1999.
