Fla. High Court Grants Gore Appeal,
Orders Recount
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Reuters) - The Florida Supreme Court (news - web
sites) on Friday ordered an immediate manual recount of disputed Miami-
Dade ballots, handing Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites) a major
victory in his battle for the White House.
The Florida Supreme Court case stemmed from Gore's appeal against a
lower court ruling this week that rejected his bid to have about 14,000 votes
out of the 6 million cast in Florida recounted, in hopes they would yield
enough votes to overtake Republican George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s
lead.
According to the certified election result, Bush won the crucial state by a
margin of 537 votes and already has been awarded a slate of 25 electors.
The national Electoral College (news - web sites) convenes on Dec. 18 to
name the 43rd leader of the world's most powerful nation.
