Edwards Air Force Base acts as magnet to flying objects

The space shuttle is not the only flying object that finds Edwards Air Force
Base
and its environs an attractive location for aerial maneuvers.
Located to the northeast of Los Angeles, the base has been the center of
several close encounters with those ubiquitous UFOs over the years.
One of the most well-documented, but underreported, cases at Edwards occurred
during the night of October 7, 1965, when fighter interceptors were launched
against aerial lights dancing through the skies all around the Edwards flight
test center.
"The Incident," as this case has come to be known, was recorded on tapes used
to monitor radar tracking data as well as radio and telephone communications.
Officers of the Los Angeles Air Defense Sector (LAADS) activated the taping
system that night when Edwards and other California air bases, including
Norton, Hamilton, George, and March received reports of UFO activity.
This system was manned by specialists in the identification of aircraft,
stars, and other objects visible in the sky as part of the North American
Defense Command (NORAD).
Shortly after midnight on Oct. 7, Air Traffic Controller Tech Sgt. Charles
Sorrels observed several glowing objects flying low over the main runway at
Edwards. The objects were flashing, alternating red, white, and green lights.
LAADS officers already were tracking luminous objects in a 50-mile radius of
Edwards. They sought authorization for the scramble of F-106 fighters to
check out the sightings.
Perhaps even more interesting than the UFOs and the interceptors themselves
was the response of a Hamilton AFB officer, who told a LAADS commander that
such a scramble could only be approved by the "UFO officer" at Edwards.
Recorded conversations indicated that such circumstances had occurred in the
past resulting in a contingency plan headed by the "UFO officer."

Edwards Test Pilot School
"The sensitive chain of command, which directed a UFO specialist to take
control, seems to indicate that previous encounters with UFOs may have
resulted in pilot accidents and they didn’t want to take unnecessary
chances," noted writer William Cutler, who investigated "The Incident" many
years later. Cutler found that at least six hours of tape concerning the
event had been declassified by the Air Force but were "released in a chopped
up time sequence which almost defied identification and explanation."
The tapes, electronically enhanced, put back into proper sequence and
released to the public, confirmed the unusual sightings and the astonished
reactions of both pilots and ground controllers.
Snippets of their dialog included:
"I have another red light and, uh, green light combination in sight moving
very rapidly over [unintelligible] at this time. I, I’m going to check . . .
to see if they have any movement in that area.
"Say, do you all have any, reports of unknown flying objects over there?"
"No, we haven’t."
"Okay. Was wondering. We supposedly are having quite an invasion over here.
[laughter]"
Some time later, flying objects appeared again over Edwards.
"Got four of them in that vee?"
"Yes, sir."
"Uh, three on the bottom side and two others."
"yes, sir, counting that, uh . . . so there’s four all together."
"Right"
" . . . we’re looking for about seven UFOs . . . "
" . . . Uh, this is coming from . . . Edwards . . . about seven of them . . .
we had white, green, flashing lights and we had them sighted visually . . .
and they are climbing now . . . "
"Describe it for me."
"I watched it through, looked at it through the glasses and it, at first
appearance it just looked like a star."
"Yeah."
"And then it started - it was white, uh, white and green. It keeps flashing
white and green and on . . . what appears might be the bottom of it . . .
it’s not intermittent flashing. It’s, uh, appears to be . . . like it fades
in and out . . . it , uh, it definitely isn’t moving . . . or constant enough
to be an aircraft . . . .And it, it, it’s definitely, uh, changing in color
from white to red or white to green and, uh, red.
"Edwards is observing them from the ground . . . there’s a lieutenant, uh,
the UFO responsible officer in bed, 30 miles away . . . My question would be
then . . . do you, uh, want to shake this lieutenant out of bed and, uh, see
if he wants to request, uh, we go up and take a look?"
"The sergeant’s reluctant to call him until he feels like he, uh, needs to,
‘cause it being three o’clock in the morning."
"This is the tower at Edwards. We have an object now [over the field] . . .
right over Edwards, moving southward fairly rapidly. And this thing also has
. . . I can make out red and white flashing lights and the captain . . . has
confirmed it."
This 1965 event was not the first or last time that UFOs buzzed one of this
nation’s most sensitive air bases.
UFOs were sighted zooming near Muroc Army Air Field (Edwards former
designation) on July 8, 1947, the same day that Roswell Army Air Field issued
a press release stating they captured a flying saucer.
Astronaut Gordon Cooper has claimed that one UFO even landed there.

Gordon Cooper
On May 3, 1957, Cooper was a captain in charge of a film crew within the Air
Force’s Experimental Flight Test Engineering Division at Edwards. His crew
reported that while they were filming the landing of a test plane that
morning, a "strange" silver saucer-shaped craft flew over them, hovered and
landed about 50 yards away after extending three landing gear. The crew
filmed the entire event.
"I knew these enlisted men to be old pros," Cooper wrote in later years, "but
they were really worked up - excited and frightened in the same breath. They
were accustomed to seeing America’s top-performance experimental aircraft
taking off, screaming low overhead, and landing in front of them on a daily
basis. Obviously what they had seen out on the dry lake bed was something
quite different, and it had unnerved them both."
Checking regulations concerning such cases, Cooper found he was to call a
Pentagon phone number. Before long, a general came on the phone and ordered
him to develop the film, make no prints and send the finished negative by
courier to Washington on the base commander’s plane. That was the last anyone
ever saw or heard of this film, although years later a passing reference to
"something unusual" at Edwards AFB was noted in the files of Project Blue
Book.
Cooper followed orders, but since nothing had been said about looking at the
film, he studied the negatives closely. "I was amazed at what I saw. The
quality was excellent, everything was in focus as one would expect from
trained photographers. The object, shown close up, was a classic saucer,
shiny silver and smooth - just as the cameramen had reported . . . I expected
to get an urgent follow-up call from Washington or the imminent arrival of
high-level investigators. After all, a craft of unknown origin had just
overflown and landed at a highly classified military installation.
"Strangely, there was not word from Washington and no inquiry was ever
launched. Everything was kept under wraps, as if the incident never happened.
Through the years, it would have been easy for me to forget the entire matter
- if I hadn’t seen those photographs [emphasis in the original]."
But while Air Force personnel, including U.S. astronauts, continue to have
UFO encounters such as these, their reports will fall on deaf ears until the
bulk of the American public decide it is time to pay attention to what
undoubtedly is the biggest story in human history.
