McCain: Senate Should Probe Hillary's Book Deal
Arizona Sen. John McCain suggested Friday that a whopping $8
million book deal inked by New York Senator-elect Hillary Clinton
may become fodder for a full blown Senate investigation.
"I would think so," McCain told NBC's "Today Show," when asked
whether Mrs. Clinton's literary jackpot warranted a conflict of
interest review by the Senate Ethics Committee.
Clinton's mega-payday comes courtesy of Simon & Schuster, the
publisher that won the intense bidding war over her book this
week. Because S & S is a division Viacom, a media giant with
business before the Senate, the deal immediately ignited conflict
of interest questions.
"This even beats Cattle Futures," one radio reporter who works
for Viacom's sister property CBS exclaimed on-the-air Saturday
morning -- a reference to the $100,000 jackpot Hillary collected
in 1979 after a meager thousand dollar investment was placed with
a shady Chicago commodities broker.
Although Clinton has yet to take office, that may not leave the
first lady much wiggle room when it comes to Senate rules. "I
think the fact is that technically she is an elected senator,"
McCain told "Today".
While Senate rules permit book advances, no other senator has
ever snagged a book deal that comes close to Clinton's $8 million
eyebrow-raiser.
The White House called reports that Hillary would rake in the
record advance before a single word was written "ridiculous." S &
S president Carolyn Reidy told the New York Daily News that
Clinton would collect her windfall "in installments."
Another source told the News that Clinton would give "a portion"
of her bonanza to charity, but declined to say how big a portion.
Because of legal fees arising from eight year's worth of White
House scandals, the first couple are in hock up to their necks.
