The opening paragraph sure sets the tone for this rant. In a funny
juxtaposition, I just heard on the radio that 2/3 of teen boys admit to
sex other than intercourse. Let's get a couple things straight.
FIrst, I don't care what the Boy or Girl Scouts do. It is a free
country. However, if they take a stance, they should be open to the
consequences of that stance. They came out and stated that personal
sexual preferences would play a part in whom to let into the groups. OK,
I'll buy that. What I really have no tolerance for is the whining they
are doing over the consequences of that decision. Most people, who
appreciate the good work the scouts do, can not in good conscience lend
their financial support to any organization that discriminates against
anyone based on race, color, creed, national origin or sexual preference.
The United Way is correct in withholding funding for the scouts because
of their stance. If the United Way, or any other agency did not, they
would lose a lot of money that would do good work. I will not contribute
my money to any organization that actively discriminates.
On the related issue of sex education in public schools, the news
of the "other than intercourse" sexual practices of teen boys indicates a
lack of knowledge about how STD's are transmitted. Far from "teaching
homosexuality", sex education MUST tell kids that STD's (AIDS being the
most dangerous) can be transmitted by any exchange of bodily fluids. We
must tell them how to protect themselves. "Just Say No" didn't work for
anti-drug education and it won't work for sex either. Tell the kids the
truth, and they will at least be able to make an informed decision. Lie
to them and they will make decisions out of ignorance; and they will lose
any respect for those lying to them when they find out the truth. Put
your petty prejudices aside for once and think about the kids and what
your fanaticism is doing to them.
