Eagle Forum has been working for years to bring an end to Clinton's commun-ist School-to-Work, which passed in 1994. STW changes the mission and curriculum of the public schools to serve the workplace instead of the child. It replaces academic studies in math, science, English, and history with job training designed to meet the needs of the local community. The mission of schools should be to teach children academics, not to apprentice them to menial jobs. STW IS STILL A BAD IDEA! STW is part of the Clinton plan to control our economy by controlling the schools. This was made clear in the infamous Marc Tucker "Dear Hillary" letter (full text available on Eagle Forum's web site). The name of the Education and the Workforce Committee indicates that the committee is designed to extend and expand Clinton's STW proposals instead of terminating and de-funding them. We believe education should be separate from workforce issue in order to reassure parents that congressional leaders understand the different functions of education issues and the labor-force concerns. We strongly support separating the Education and the Workforce Committee. Education should stand alone in its own committee, to ensure parents that their children are not being used merely to serve the workforce, as in the German model. SUPPORT FOR STW IS ALIVE AND WELL! Unfortunately a letter is now circulating on Capitol Hill by Congressman John Boehner which not only opposes the separation of the committee functions into Education and Workforce, but also indicates that he subscribes to the STW approach to education. In this letter he said, "Particularly in today's economy, it is simply impossible to consider workforce and education issues separately.The single biggest educational issue is preparing our children for the demands of the workforce." ACTION ITEMS! Select members of the Republican Conference (the Steering Committee) will soon meet to decide the jurisdiction of the committees. The Republican Leadership is planning to discuss splitting the Education and Workforce Committee this week! Contact the Steering Committee immediately and urge them to separate the Education and Workforce committee into two committees to assure parents that you intend to make a clean break with the mission and curriculum set forth in Clinton's School to Work Act of 1994. It is also urgent that we have a chairman of the Education Committee who is determined to return control to parents and local schools and stop Clinton's federalizing of school curriculum.
