McDougal Executor Filed Suit to 'Right' Prison Death 'Wrong'

Claudia Riley, executor for the estate of the late James B.
McDougal, said Monday she approved a wrongful death lawsuit in
his case to help close out any business matters left behind by
the key Whitewater witnesses and to "right" any wrongdoing
connected with his death.

"If a wrong can be righted, I'm for that," Riley said in an
exclusive interview with NewsMax.com, explaining that she signed
off on the complaint after her personal lawyer encouraged her to
do so.

"We are trying to close this out," Riley said. "We had been
approached by attorneys. And it had to have my signature affixed
before they could do any investigation on this. These are people
who handle wrongful deaths or deliberate indifference or whatever
you want to call it."

Riley is being represented in federal court by Warren Gotcher and
Sean McKeating of McAlester, Oklahoma.

McDougal died in solitary confinement on March 8, 1998 while
being held at the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Three of his fellow inmates came forward three months later
claiming prison officials confiscated his heart medication hours
before the key Whitewater witness collapsed from cardiac arrest.
By one account guards refused to return McDougal's medicine even
when he complained of chest pains and dizziness.

Riley was McDougal's sole heir. He had no living blood relatives
at the time of his death. He and Susan McDougal had divorced in
1986.

Before entering jail in 1996 as part of a plea bargain
arrangement with the Office of Independent Counsel, McDougal
lived in a trailer on Riley's Arkedelphia, Ark. property.

In his 1998 autobiography "Arkansas Mischief," McDougal said
Riley and her late husband Bob had made him "part of their
family." Before his death, Mr. Riley had served as Arkansas Lt.
Governor.

The $20 million lawsuit, first filed in March of this year, was
dismissed Friday by U.S. District Court Judge John McBryde, who
said that it failed to support Riley's claims that prision
officials mistreated the Clintons' former Whitewater business
partner.

McBryde also argued that Riley lacked legal standing to bring the
claim.

But the federal judge said her attorneys could amend the lawsuit
and refile by Wednesday Dec. 20.

Earlier this year, Susan McDougal described the circumstances of
her ex-huband's death in harsh terms, telling NewsMax.com that
the Office of Independent Counsel had ignored his pleas for help.

"He got put in solitary confinement and died on the cold cement
floor without his medicine, calling for help and asking the
Independent Counsel to help him," she said.

Two months later, McDougal told Fox News Channel's "Hannity &
Colmes" that her husband had been "killed."

Attorneys for Riley and Mrs. McDougal did not return calls for
comment before presstime.
