There has been another polio vaccine scandal in Ireland. The Taoiseach (Prime
Minister) was given a shot beofre visiting China in 1998. That batch is now at the
centre of a health scare.
Why are they vaccinating adults against polio anyway? Apart from being very rare, I
thought it was only contracted by children?

Ahern given suspect booster

TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern was among those who received the polio vaccine at the centre of
the Department of Health alert.
He got a booster injection prior to his visit to China in September 1998.
Mr Ahern and at least two of his officials were given the booster. The Taoiseach's
partner, Celia Larkin, was also on the trip but it was unclear last night whether she
had been given the vaccine.
A Government spokesman said Mr Ahern had discussed the issue with Health Minister
Miche�l Martin in advance of yesterday's announcement.
Confirming that Mr Ahern was among the 87,000 people who had received the vaccine, the
Government spokesman said the Taoiseach was not concerned about the matter. He said Mr
Ahern was "reassured" by the Department's handling of the situation.
The Taoiseach travelled to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong along with a group of
industrialists.
