Hillary Is House Proud
Sees Washington digs as a Dem White House

WASHINGTON illary Rodham Clinton's hunt for an imposing
Georgetown home is being driven by her desire to position herself
as the new intellectual and fund-raising leader for the
out-of-power Democrats, the Daily News has learned.
"It needs to be somewhat grand," said a knowledgeable source
about Hillary's dream house. Clinton needs such a base to help
transform her from freshman senator to powerbroker in the mode of
the late Pamela Harriman, who provided a haven for the Democrats
during their long Reagan-Bush exile from the White House.
Clinton, the source says, knows she needs a house that can
function simultaneously as a residence and home office for her �
and an intellectual salon for her party's brainy stalwarts.
One source said Clinton intends to be "the hostess with the
mostest."
If the First Lady's grand scheme succeeds, Clinton will enhance
her chances of being a top Democratic presidential or veep
prospect in 2004.
"It's a totally new model," the source said, a "Pamela Harriman
for the new century ... that's the role she wants to fill."
Harriman, the wife and lover of a string of famous men ranging
from Winston Churchill's son, Randolph, to W. Averell Harriman,
died in 1997.
"After [Ronald] Reagan won [the presidency], she just set out to
create the new power center for out-of-power Democrats," Sally
Bedell Smith, a Pamela Harriman biographer, said yesterday. Her
Georgetown salon became "a comfortable, elegant place for party
leaders and aspiring politicians to get together."
But Harriman's highest achievement in government service was a
cushy appointment by President Clinton as ambassador to France.
"Because the Democrats won't have the White House, they're going
to need a place to meet and entertain," a source said. "I guess
Hillary sees herself as the hostess."
Smith said that throughout Harriman's life, she specialized in
putting people together "who could get to know each other and use
each other."
"It was all very cozy and intimate and atmospheric and very
effective," Smith recalled. "She developed a style of
fund-raising that was very unique. She kept the lights burning
for the Democratic Party."
Hillary Clinton, who handed out boxes of food to poor people in
Harlem yesterday, swore during her recent campaign that she would
serve her entire six-year term as senator from New York and would
not run for President in 2004.
But President Clinton made the same pledge to Arkansas voters
when running successfully for a four-year gubernatorial term in
1990 � then wriggled out of it to make his successful 1992 White
House bid.
Sources said Clinton will likely rent here for her first year in
the Senate while she and her husband sock away the kind of cash
they'll need to buy the perfect place.
They looked seriously at a sprawling Georgetown mansion that once
belonged to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' mother, but are unlikely
to buy the house, which is listed at $4.4 million.
The Clintons considered Northern Virginia, but ruled that out as
hostile territory because it is heavily populated by
conservatives, one source said.
"It's full of right-wingers like [Weekly Standard editor] Bill
Kristol and Ken Starr," not to mention Vice President-elect Dick
Cheney, the source said.
Clinton will have a valuable ally in Terry McAuliffe, the family
friend just named Democratic National Committee chairman. He has
raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the Clintons, ranging
from their campaigns to their legal bills to President Clinton's
library in Little Rock, Ark.
